Acura-badged model is teased at US debut of limited-run Honda NSX Type S supercar

Honda will revive the fabled Integra name after a break of 15 years for a new ‘compact premium’ car that's set to arrive next year.

The Integra name was used for four generations of sports coupé that were produced by the Japanese firm from 1986 until 2006.

Its return in 2022 was confirmed by Acura – Honda’s American-market premium brand – during the launch of the NSX Type S.

Acura said that the revived Integra will “rejoin the performance brand’s product portfolio as a new compact premium entrant” and released a single teaser image showing part of the front end of the new car, which features Integra written beneath the headlights.

Acura brand officer Jon Ikeda said that the new Integra would offer “the same fun-to-drive spirit and DNA of the original”.

No further details of the machine have been revealed, including whether it would be offered in markets outside of North America or if a range-topping performance variants carrying Honda’s Type R or Acura’s Type S branding would be produced.

The revived Integra could be produced at Honda’s plant in Marysville, Ohio, where it would serve as a logical replacement for the NSX. The hybrid supercar will cease production there once the 350 Type S versions are finished. As with the previous versions, the new Integra could use underpinning from the Civic.

There’s plenty of big news streaming out of Monterey Car Week in the US. But if you’ve had your fill of £2m hypercars, then here’s some marvellous news for those of us living in the real world: the Integra is coming back.

That’s the Acura Integra, mind, and given the laser focus of Honda’s current UK range on small hybrids and EVs – with the exception of the mesmeric Civic Type R – we shan’t yet be betting the house on seeing a Honda Integra on these shores.

But it’s exciting news nonetheless. “I’m thrilled to say Integra is returning to the Acura lineup with the same fun-to-drive spirit and DNA of the original,” says Jon Ikeda, Acura VP, “fulfilling our commitment to Precision Crafted Performance in every way – design, performance and the overall driving experience.”

And that’s it. More information will be drip-fed to us as the Integra’s “2022 introduction” nears, but the anticipation for a front-driven Toyota GR 86 rival is suddenly rather palpable. It’s also quite the time for ‘nineties coupe nameplate comebacks’, and if the Ford Puma has taught us anything, it’s that the reality doesn’t always tally with the dream.

The Acura Integra Is Back

The fifth-generation of a car that hasn't been made in over a decade will soon be a thing.

The Acura Integra, a car that you lusted after in high school but never quite had the money for, is coming back in 2022, Acura announced on Friday. Maybe even a Type R, too? We can only hope.

Acura did not release any details about the new Integra beyond the photo you see above and a quote from an executive. The first thing the executive says is that, “The Integra is back.” The second thing Jon Ikeda, Vice President and Acura Brand Officer, says is:

“I’m thrilled to say Integra is returning to the Acura lineup with the same fun-to-drive spirit and DNA of the original, fulfilling our commitment to Precision Crafted Performance in every way – design, performance and the overall driving experience.”

And that is about it, except to say that the new Integra will be a “compact premium entrant,” which makes me wonder if the ILX’s days are numbered.

Will the new Integra be electrified in some way? Unclear! I would more expect a slightly restyled 2022 Honda Civic, but with two doors. Or at least it sure looks like a two-door car in images from the announcement at Monterey Car Week last night:

The Honda Integra moniker will be making its return after its discontinuation 15 years ago. Local JDM lovers may be disappointed by the announcement however, as its likely that this will be a USA-specific product under the guise of the brand’s premium Acura division.

The announcement of the new Honda Integra took place at the official unveiling of the Acura NSX Type S and has been pitched as a new compact premium product that will be introduced into the brand’s product line-up by next year.

“The Integra is back,” said Jon Ikeda Vice President and Acura Brand Officer. “I’m thrilled to say Integra is returning to the Acura lineup with the same fun-to-drive spirit and DNA of the original, fulfilling our commitment to Precision Crafted Performance in every way – design, performance and the overall driving experience.”

The brand confirms that more information regarding the Honda Integra will be revealed closer to its introduction date.

The Honda Integra was first launched in 1986 but adopted the Acura badge one year later as an introductory product to the Japanese brand’s American affiliated badge. The car was so popular, that in 2004, the CCC Information Services confirmed that the 1999 Integra was the most stolen car in the USA with the 1998 model being the third most pilfered. In 2014, LoJack named the Integra as the sixth most stolen car among vehicles equipped with its car tracking service.

Honda first launched the Integra in 1986, and none of the models were ever sold in South Africa though its third-generation B18B engine used in the DC2 Type R is sold at local engine importers across the country.

The fifth-generation Integra follows other iconic models in the Acura/Honda portfolio, like the high-performance Type S and the electrified NSX supercar offerings.

Unofficial renders show us what we *could* have had before Acura's own interpretation even lands

We learned last week that the Honda Integra is making a comeback. Quite what form it’ll take, we don’t yet know. How we dearly hope it’ll look like the car in these pictures.

These rendered illustrations aren’t official, but they are exceptional. They’re the work of Jordan Rubinstein-Towler and not only has he reimagined the classic Nineties Integra Type-R in modern form, but he’s crafted a whole spec for it too.

So up front there’s a 2.4-litre 4cyl VTEC engine delivering its 276bhp peak at 8,600rpm, suggesting this is a modern Honda that’s resisted the turbo movement. Already Jordan's dream is drifting away from reality…

There’s a titanium exhaust, close-ratio six-speed manual, limited-slip differential and manually adjustable coilovers with 18in Enkei forged wheels at the end of them. It apparently weighs a whisker under 1.2 tonnes thanks to a carbon bonnet, roof and hatch, while the interior is stripped out with the minimalist beauty of an Elise S1 – an Alcantara-wrapped wheel and digital dials are about the only nods to luxury, with air con, a stereo and active drive assist systems all optional.

If you saw the first teaser for next year’s Acura Integra revival, you may have expected a two-door was on its way. After seeing the faked spy shots, that’s what I expected too. Turns out, we were both wrong.

[COLOR=var(--darkreader-inline-color)]Acura sent out a second teaser today, this time featuring the rear of the upcoming Integra. The dark photo doesn’t reveal much of the car’s side profile, but the panel gaps show off two important features: a break for two rear doors, and a hatch that extends up into the roof.

Some may be disappointed, seeing their hopes of an ultra-lightweight two door Type R successor dashed on the cliffs of daily practicality. The change, though, isn’t without precedent for the Integra nameplate.

Back in the 1980s and 1990s, Honda produced a sporty compact coupe and sedan line-up called the Integra, which was also sold under the Acura premium brand in the US. Although the Honda Integra was sold in various markets, including Europe and Australia, it sadly never made its way to South Africa.

Now Honda is working on a brand new Integra for 2022 and although at this stage it appears to be an Acura product for the US, a global version is surely not out of the question.

Honda on Wednesday released a second teaser image for the new Acura Integra, confirming for the first time that the car will take the form of a coupe-like five-door fastback with a sleek silhouette and slim taillights inspired by the 1990s model.

Honda’s Acura division isn’t saying much else about the rebooted Integra as yet, but a full reveal can’t be too far off. According to Australian website Drive, the new Integra is likely to share its front-wheel drive platform with the latest Honda Civic sedan, with power speculated to come from a detuned version of the 2-litre turbopetrol fitted to the Civic Type R. A ‘Type S’ version of the Integra is likely to headline the range, with outputs of just over 200kW and 380Nm. An all-wheel drive system, and 10-speed automatic gearbox, is also likely on the cards, as per the Acura TLX premium sedan, Drive reports.

The new "compact premium" car will arrive next year, with more details planned to be revealed closer to its 2022 launch date.

The Integra name was used for four generations of sports coupé that were produced by the Japanese firm from 1986 until 2006. Its return in 2022 was confirmed by Acura – Honda’s American-market premium brand – during the launch of the NSX Type S.

Even if it's front-wheel drive, expect the 2023 Integra to be a hoot.

Ever since Acura announced plans to bring back the Integra, details on what exactly the new Integra will be have remained scarce. A spokesperson for the Japanese automaker said it would have “the same fun-to-drive spirit and DNA of the original,” but that’s not exactly much to go on. Now, however, we at least know one thing about the new Integra. It’s getting a manual transmission.

Specifically, Acura’s given the new Integra a six-speed manual transmission, which it showed off in a teaser video that it today. The video itself is less than 30 seconds long and shows a disembodied hand rowing through the gears, one from each generation of Integra. So there you go. Manual Integra confirmed.

We’ve known for a little while the Honda Integra is coming back. In the US as an Acura Integra, at least.

Acura is teasing the car bit by bit, but when the news is as positive as this, we don’t mind. It’s getting a manual gearbox.

“I’m thrilled to say Integra is returning to the Acura line-up with the same fun-to-drive spirit and DNA of the original,” said Jon Ikeda, Acura VP, “fulfilling our commitment to design, performance and the overall driving experience.”

The new-age 'Teg is described as having 'an available six-speed manual transmission’, suggesting an automatic will also be on offer, and potentially standard fit. No doubt we’ll get another weeny teaser in a few weeks to reveal another incremental detail.
