I'm looking to get an explorer/multi purpose type ride and really want this bike. Does anyone here have any experience with this particular model? I've got a budget of around 30k for a second hand.

I think your budget could be a bit light for this model - prices I've seen are on average R45K. You might want to look at the Kawasaki KLR650, also a very capable machine.
