OK, just to get my bearing straight: Phuket is in Thailand and Bali is in Indonesia?
I like weird, interesting and different things, so I think Thailand will be more suited than Zanzibar?

Zanzibar is a waste of money. The island is dirty and the roads are terrible. You are basically stuck next to the pool...also massive tidal differences so on high tide water is at the hotel and lowtide it is a kilometer away over reefs and mud. Also you get accosted by locals as soon as you step on the beach. Go to Thailand for adventure and lazing by the pool...it actually is cheaper than Zanzibar, Kenya or Mozambique. Moz. currently more expensive than Mauritius or Seychelles...but with craploads more mozzies. Stay away.
