Psychologists go through the same training. I maintain that a trauma counsellor is not the way to go...
It's not only training, it's also experience.

Someone who has been exclusively helping people deal with trauma for 10 years is going to be better at it than someone who has been dealing with peoples low self-esteem issues, childhood issues, eating disorders, sexual frustrations and other such things that psychologists deal with on a day to day basis. Also, counsellors are often cheaper which makes a big difference as people generally need a number of sessions to deal with an issue, whether from a counsellor or a psychologist.

You're right to an extent, but I completely disagree that a trauma counsellor is the first port of call...
