Hello all (Throwaway account for privacy reasons)

I need some advice. My father is very ill and doesn't have much time left, he is in bed at home but he's getting weaker by the day and likely won't be able to get around on his own much longer.

I would like to get know what options there are for getting him into hospital or some other care facility for the last few days or weeks (my parents don't have medical cover but we don't mind footing private hospital bills for a short while).

We're in Cape Town (blouberg area). It would be nice if somebody had some experience with this and has any advice who we should call first before I waste a lot of effort.

Have looked at Hospice but it requires application with a doctors letter and weeks on a waiting list.

Thanks!

Im sorry to hear that. Hospitals typically send people home or to a hospice I believe. Does he need specific assistance or can you hire a nurse for home care while you are not around?
Private hospital bills can also rack up insanely fast so be sure you have all the facts before making such a comitment.

Sorry about the situation and I know it's unrelated to your question but have you considered a caregiver instead of a hospital to help relieve the load on you? Should be cheaper than a hospital which is around R2k a night for just the room

Thanks. Yes an additional caregiver may be a better option for now. I'm also just not sure who to call (and trust) with this.

Thanks. Same as above but just not sure who exactly to call.

Sorry to hear about your dad.
Family of mine also looked into this option a while back and there are companies that provide this type of service.

All the best.

A quick Google showed this :

You get step down facilities for assisted care. Your Drs should know phone and ask them.

Whats wrong with your dad if you dont mind me asking

Having a home carer for the elderly is helpful but are they able to monitor patients in the last weeks of their lives, eg, administer morphine for pain, have oxygen immediately available etc?

I think this is what OP's looking for.

We just went through this with Mrs Netherby's father. The family opted for a step down center, which was the best option given the rapid decline we had witnessed.
