Berlin - The father of Natascha Kampusch, the Austrian teenager who was kidnapped and kept in a basement cell for eight years, told German television on Thursday his daughter's strong will had saved her life.

"Even as a small child Natascha was a very strong character, and this has grown with her. Her strong will saved her life," Ludwig Koch told N24 news channel.

"In spite of these eight years, she has developed a tough, intelligent personality. The upbringing her mother and I gave her must have helped to sustain her."

Koch said he was very proud of his daughter and how she handled her first television interview, which was watched on Wednesday evening by almost 10 million viewers in Austria and Germany.

Concern

But he said he was concerned she was being exposed to the public eye too soon after she escaped from her captor on August 23 and blamed the team of psychologists who are watching over her.

"I could see how much it (the interview) was taking out of her. I would have given her a few more weeks to recover," he said.

Koch, who was often close to tears as he spoke, said being reunited with his daughter after she had been presumed dead for years, had changed his life.

"I am a different person since she has come back. I am stronger and full of joy again."

Kampusch was snatched on a Viennese street on her way to school when she was 10 years old and held, dirty and underfed, in a basement in the Viennese suburb of Strasshof by telecommunications technician Wolfgang Priklopil.

Suicide

Priklopil committed suicide by throwing himself in front of a train a few hours after she managed to escape while he was busy talking on his mobile phone.

Kampusch has told journalists that she had mourned Priklopil to a certain extent when she heard of his death, but had earlier fantasised about killing him in order to escape.

"Sometimes I dreamt of chopping his head off, if I had an axe," she told Austria's ORF television on Wednesday, adding, "you see how the brain works when it's looking for a solution".

Radio, TV

The attractive, blonde 18-year-old has charmed the media and public with her eloquence and self-confidence.

She said she tried to educate herself and to stay informed of world events while she was held captive. Priklopil allowed her limited access to radio and television.

Natascha's parents divorced after she disappeared. Her mother has seen her a few times in the past three weeks, but Koch has only met with his daughter once.

He said he would love to help her face the future.

"She will manage to overcome this. We will support her," he added.

My one question - why did she wait till now to try to escape?!

Cos he only let her out of his eye for that one moment.

That's not how I understood it as she mentioned that when she went to the shops he would walk behind her andshe would try to catch the eye of passersby.

Her kidnapper probably told her that SA's SNO opened and she has a choice, and she was like..."OMG ! WTF ! Nay ways, I'm outta here...."

yeah that girl, I think she enjoyed it ... saw her speaking on TV the other day, she looked pretty normal for somebody after 8 years being hostage ...

I think the guy lured her and she probably was pissed with her parents and decided to try something different ...

also she went on a ski trip and whatever with the guy, I mean lets be realistic, looking at the guy photo, what are the chances he would have killed somebody if she has screamed for help?!
