I've put this query in the Cell C section of the forum, as it relates to a SIM of theirs I bought today for testing. However, it could equally relate to VC, 8ta or MTN.

What I'd like to know is, based on the speeds below, does the Host Server default automatically to Cell C server if I'm using a Cell C SIM ? How do you select which host server you want to connect to, or is it not optional ?

The thing is, if wanting to conserve some data, one might want to only connect at the speed I got for MWEB, and not about double that for Cell C.

Cell C speeds - PE (approx. 14h30)

Hosted by Cell C (JHB) - 3.90Mbps d/load ; ping 151ms
Hosted by MWEB (JHB) - 1.82Mbps d/load ; ping 151ms
Hosted by MTN Business (JHB) - 2.74Mbps ; ping 151ms
Hosted by Vodacom (JHB) - 0.53Mbps ; ping 370ms

Upload for all in region of 0.34Mbps (except for VC = 0.25Mbps).

It's the amount of data that matters, not how quickly you get it.

If you do more things. You won't magically use more data because your connection is faster. 1 MB in 2 seconds is the same as 1 MB in 4 seconds.

Besides, that's not really a slower connection rate that you're seeing. The CellC server is the fastest because it's on the same network.

Thanks for the added info. - so, per original question, it defaults automatically to Cell C (in this case) - as it's on the same network ?

That's right, think of it as a best case scenario. Most of the data you use is probably international anyway, so test on an overseas server for more realistic results.
