Hostility justified, Cosatu says

there are just no words for the ignorance of the cosatu. *stunned into silence* *blink*

South Africa has enormous potential, however it will eternally be tied to the African paradigm. Cosatu = a symptom of the African paradigm.

The DA will be laying charges against COSATU on this one thankfully.... I hope they make them suffer.

VERY IRRITATING when someone justifies violence, but had it been perpetrated against them, they would be oh so upset.

It's OK if they do it but no-one else may do the same against them.

What happened to fairness ??

"What will happen is when workers get old? Bosses will throw them into the street and replace them with 18-year-olds receiving a subsidy," Vavi said.
What the hell is up with this? Don't we have laws to protect against unfair dismissal and laws that govern retrenchments?

I might be the one who's naive, but if there really were NO available jobs then the JobMail and the classifieds in the papers wouldn't exist, right? Everyone wants to hire people with experience, but you can't gain experience if you aren't hired, and you're not gonna be hired 'cause you don't have experience.

Experience and aquired skills will make it easier for you to get a job. I really don't see how a union who is supposed to be pro-'people getting jobs' can be against this...

COSATU are not pro-people getting jobs. They are pro-their people keeping their jobs.

And I am not talking about the worker as 'their' people. It is about those who have positions with the labour structures. I am pretty sure than not one of those old farts wants to be shown up by a bright young thing.

Every time Cosatu start to appear sensible they do something idiotic. They're quite entitled to oppose these subsidies and give their reasons why. Nothing wrong with being hostile towards the DA for backing the proposal either. But nowhere does that give any justification to attacking the DA marchers.

Tolerance means allowing people their differing views. It doesn't mean you can't dislike them and their views.

There is no African paradigm.

In a counter-memorandum, Cosatu said the majority of South African workers were opposed to all DA policies, as they reflected the interests of its "backers in big business".
There are many things over which I'd criticise the DA, in fact I'd call some of their policies and laws plain evil, but I hardly think they believe this subsidy is a good idea because they intend businesses to make a killing out of it.

"What will happen is when workers get old? Bosses will throw them into the street and replace them with 18-year-olds receiving a subsidy," Vavi said.
But that's how social welfare works. We effectively make it cheaper to hire these younger people, so that businesses hire more of them and while we foot part of the bill. It is of course necessary to monitor this and make sure businesses do in fact employ more people rather than just shifting the additional profits into the hands of top executives and shareholders.

I might be the one who's naive, but if there really were NO available jobs then the JobMail and the classifieds in the papers wouldn't exist, right? Everyone wants to hire people with experience, but you can't gain experience if you aren't hired, and you're not gonna be hired 'cause you don't have experience.
Usually that experience is what the employer would ideally like. Many times it is better to hire someone with potential who has less than the desired experience rather than be short of staff. The bigger problem though is a lack of jobs. To me the subsidy makes it possible to hire more people without additional expense and that should have further beneficial knock-on effects for the company and society.

Experience and aquired skills will make it easier for you to get a job. I really don't see how a union who is supposed to be pro-'people getting jobs' can be against this...
Although age can be a huge impediment. Being older, more and better experience or not, can make it harder to get work.

It's amazing how black people see the DA, some of the comments heard on the radio today include,
-The DA and Zille are marching to detract from FW De Klerk's comments on CNN:wtf:
-The DA is marching to detract from the tender issue (on both accounts the presenter asked how that can be seeing that the March was planned way back before these issues)
-Why are there no white people amongst the marchers?
-Surprise at the number of black people in the DA:wtf:

We're a very long from finding each other in this country.

Hilarious... First they bitch about the DA being too white and now it's too black.

Wish they'd make up their race-obsessed little minds already.

Or, you know, start thinking more about what the people are talking about rather than their colour? Nah, that's wishful thinking.

They "want" the DA to be white because that's the only way the racist mind can comprehend it.
There are lots of people on both sides who think the same racist notions. DA = white. ANC = black.
marine1 is one such good example.

I think these union guys were just so scared that the DA was taking them on at their own game.

Another funny one was that the DA doesn't want workers to exist. Silly though, who would do all the work? :p

Are they going to arrest the COSATU aligned individual who assaulted people with a stun gun?

A man from the Cosatu crowd came out with a stun gun and started shocking people. (Herman Verwey, City Press

If it was justified then the po-po wouldn't have had to step in, moron.

This is a disgusting precedent to set - thanking the cosatu supporters for acts of violence against a political party with different ideals is atrocious. It sends the message that in future, violence against political opposition is perfectly acceptable and in fact, supported...

When we silence those we disagree with, we silence ourselves.

Interesting opinion piece, especially the bold part.

I disagree with the DA on what the effect of their proposed Youth Wage Subsidy will be. For my full reasoning on this, click here.

But the DA march on Cosatu exposed an important principle, one that is being trampled.

It is the right I hold to be the most fundamental of all rights, and it is the right that Cosatu and its supporters who have called the DA action “provocative” are most willing to trample.

It is the right to disagree.

The Avusa building has had protests outside its doors before. These protests have largely been peaceful, but imagine for one second if we the people who work here started throwing stones at them.

It wouldn’t be a triumph of the free media, it wouldn’t be a matter of people saying the protesters were engaged in a “provocative” action, and the discussion wouldn’t be centred around how the protesters should have been marching somewhere else, it would have quite simply been wrong.

The DA march was legally constituted, and Cosatu had no right to deny the marchers their voice.

There are people who say this opens the door to Cosatu counter-marching on the DA’s offices. That door has always been open, Cosatu has every right to do so should they choose and if the DA greets them similarly the DA would be in the wrong.

The DA is in my opinion wrong on its policy – but that does not translate into it being right to silence their arguments for that policy.

Otherwise abusive employers could quite justly consider Cosatu provocative when it marches on their factories – and hire thugs to open fire. The government could very well proclaim striking public service workers “provocative” and shoot them down.

After all, those employers think Cosatu is wrong. Violence is not the solution to incorrect speech, the solution is more speech otherwise whether we are right or wrong; we all lose.

As Voltaire once said, “I disagree with what you say, but I will fight to the death for your right to say it.”
