Have you seen the price of their local server costs? Theyre incredibly cheap when compared to the local competition.

For around R680 you get a Dell server with 2x 500GB drives in raid and 50GB of bandwidth.

At Hetzner the similar product costs R890 and you get only 7.5GB of bandwidth.

Wow, really impressed with their pricing.

Pretty epic pricing! Nice bandwidth allocation.

I wouldn't host with them even if someone paid me to

Before switching over to my own dedicated I was with them

I waited 2 weeks for a support inquiry after phoning like crazy at last got somewhere

The cost is the labor for the installation, not the license. i.e. if you choose Linux you still pay it, if you choose Windows you still pay it + the license fee.

Are you sure about that? On the website they explicitly state that are no setup fees.

No setup fees. Additional traffic is charged at R0.02 per MB. (Minimum Contract – 12 Months)

Poor form if the are charging for setup...

@byron_spy: Did you have a dedicated server with them?

Yes I did I would not recommend going that route

You planning on mostly local traffic or abroad traffic ?

Bottom line is that hosting is an add on service for mweb. They are primarily an ISP, bandwidth provider. I personally feel a lot more comfortable hosting with a company where hosting is thier core service.

We host with Hetzner but those prices are significantly cheaper. What problems did you have?

I had a problem with user rights permission on their side which I couldnt sort out I waited like 2 weeks for them to even look at, when going dedicated route you need a company that fast and reliable or your business goes no where fast

Surely you managed your own server and would have sorted this out? Or did you have a fully managed system? I would only be interested in colocation with their hardware. I dont want their techs messing around on my servers.

This was about a year and half back and they did not provide the option I had to use log me in

Now with my new company (they not really new but anyways) I connect via remote desktop which is way better and I can handle it all by my self

The point though is mweb does not have after sales support and I still get this from friends etc on a weekly basis

You wouldn't definately want them messing around on your server that's for sure, definately a no no

What user rights? That doesn't sound like a problem on Mweb's side. If you're not paying for a managed service, why would you expect them to prioritize and troubleshoot your issues (for free)? Data centre techs are often unindated with requests that fall completely outside the terms of service. Kudos to Mweb for dealing with your request at all. A dedicated server is offered as is, you are expected to be proficient enough to manage your box yourself.

If it was a hardware failure or connectivity problem and took 2 weeks to resolve you'd every right to complain, but in this case writing them off is a little unfair.

Be it as it may I just feel paying over R900 a month to a company not offering little or no support is not right

Thus I believe their is much better out there and I am definitely 100% sure about that

Well said, it is not really their problem.

That is an extremely small price for a dedicated server, even if I assume it uses desktop components. One pays multiple times that for enterprise hardware and still only have hardware support.

I am quite surprised they charge labour for OS installs etc. These can be easily automated.

From the PDF on the website:

No set-up fee
Intel Xeon X3430 (8M cache, 2.40 GHz)
4GB 1066 DDR3 ECC RAM
2 x 500GB SATA hard drives; 7200rpm
50GB Traffic quota (Additional traffic is charged at R0.02 per MB)

Enterprise hardware for under R700 per month. I'm also curious about the OS installs. No setup fee, should mean no setup fee including the OS. Maybe SoftDux-Rudi is referring to OS reloads?

I was mainly referring to the motherboard, PSU and chassis setup. I wouldn't have guessed that the OS reloads was not automated by them but they may have valid reason for it.

I would definitely stay away from Mweb. As for having a dedicated server, has anyone looked at running an Amazon Cloud Server instance? They now have a one year free setup, which has minimal resources, but their costs seem to be ok as far as I have seen. Plus you have the added feature of getting a server up and running in less than 30 minutes.

Wont touch Amazon with the ANCYL`s website - Amazon`s business is too politicized.
