Greets - I'm new here, been meaning to join for a while. :D

I run a design and development firm, and was wondering what would be the best route to take when it comes to hosting client websites. Normally, I'd say that the client should host their own sites, but there are two things that I've had to consider. Some clients prefer their site to be designed and hosted by the same company. It reduces hassle. Also, I'd like to make a bit of money on the side - this is how business is. ;)

I'm thinking of going down the reseller road - is it a good choice? If so, which host would you recommend? Anyone here with specific solutions?

Thanks a mil! :D

I offer overseas hosting to my web design clients.

There are many hosting companies out there but just be wary of hosting companies owned by EIG (Endurance International Group) as some of their hosting companies are shyte in terms of service & support and their resources get overloaded in terms of performance.

See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Endurance_International_Group for a list of their companies.

Thanks for the responses.

@ITCynic - I need to keep it local...

@Wayne - I do indeed like your packages. If Reseller Hosting is the way to go, then I'll investigate all the different offers there are out there.

That said, I do need to know, perhaps from someone who has wondered what to do, what the best solution is. Is Reseller Hosting worthwhile for me and my business? Or is it better to make the client host their own sites?

As a web designer, it can only benefit you to be able to offer web hosting as part of the overall package.
As you mentioned, it's a great way to earn some additional recurring income from your clients, especially given the often 'once off' nature of web design.
The ability to offer some free hosting (be it 3, 6, 12 months etc.) with your web design packages can make them that much more appealing, especially given the stiff competition that often exists within the web design industry. Also a great way to entice new customers to host with you who already host elsewhere.

We have several Reseller Hosting packages on offer.
All packages include WHM which allows you to fully manage your customers' hosting and provide them with their own individual cPanel accounts.

We're happy to help if you have any questions!

Okay, thanks indeed. I'll be looking into this further once I start to get things going. I'm also going to get some feedback from my current, active clients.

And Happy New Year to all of you :D

Thanks for the responses.

Hi,

We find that a lot of design/development companies that we host, prefer to host their clients sites on their behalf. This usually gives you more control and the ability to change or update the sites freely on a common environment. Instead of having to deal with different hosting providers, with different environments, different setups, policies, etc.

The actual solution you choose depends on your in house technical abilities. If you have the technical abilities I would recommend a Cloud Hosted cPanel solution where you have full admin access to the solution and can customize or change it however you see fit. We have a setup we do on our cloud environment that a large number of Reseller use that has proven to be rock solid and performs really well.

If you do not have these technical skills in house or simply don't want to worry about them, then Reseller Hosting would be the best solution. In this solution the hosting provider takes care of all the technical aspects of the environment and you simply setup the hosting accounts and manage them. In this solution there are a few questions you should be asking the hosting provider before deciding who to go with:

- Do they own & manage their infrastructure or simply reselling another providers infrastructure? You don't want to be a reseller or another reseller. You want to be as high up the chain as possible.

- Where are their servers located? If your customers target audience is mostly South African, then you want these servers to be located in South Africa.

- What is their hosting infrastructure (servers/networking/etc) and what are their backup policies? You want a provider with decent hardware (fast processors, lots of ram, and SSD drives) and a decent backup policy of at least daily.

- Try determine if they are over provisioning their infrastructure. By this I mean you don't want a provider who puts 50 Resellers on a server running SATA drives in raid 1. Over time as the resellers grow and the number of sites on the server grows, this server is just going to get slower and slower as database queries and site traffic increases.

- Do they offer you migration or upgrade solutions for when you outgrow their Reseller Hosting? Inevitable, if all goes well, you will grow your hosting to the point that you outgrow your Reseller Hosting, what solutions does the provider offer you in the way of growth?

Regards,
Dave

I found this hosting the other day, signed up, tested, and moved my dev stuff and international hosting to them.

All their stuff has automatic failover and everything on SSD, their IO is way better than what I've seen with other hosts (digitalocean is one that was compared). They also offer something I've been looking for (as a developer), for a long long time...

You buy resources, and can create as many cloud instances you'd like from it. $10 gets you 1GB Ram, 1 CPU and 30GB disk space. From there you can create at least 2 instances or 1 if you like. You upgrade the amount of resources, and assign them to your cloud instances. You're not locked into using x amount of disk with x amount of RAM or CPU at all. You decide what you want as you want.

Pretty awesome IMO
