Not 100% sure where to place this but thought I would put it out to you knowledgeable fellows on the forum.

In a nutshell we will be putting a Mac Desktop down in our reps office in the US. We will then need a guy from JHB to remotely log in, create a video and then leave it on the desktop in the US for the reps to burn to DVD and courier the DVD off to a client.

Can you think of the most assured way of connecting to this box ? I have been suggested RealVNC. Obviously I need a sure way of being able to connect to his box.

Also who does one speak to about getting connectivity in the US ?

Any suggestions would greatly be appreciated.

What sort of connection are you using? I do remote work on family's machines fairly regularly but as we both only have adsl its can be pretty laggy. I dont think I would want to try and do video editing that way.

Mac's come with a built in VNC server/client that works pretty well

Will both ends be using Macs?

Thanks for the reply bwana :-)

To answer your questions:

What sort of connection are you using?

Initially for proof of concept stage it will be 4Mb ADSL (either Verizon unshaped or Telkom unshaped) leaving SA. with regards to connectivity in the US, I am not even sure where to start with organising this but hoping our rep in NY organises it and we pay them.

I dont think I would want to try and do video editing that way.
It isnt really video editing, more compiling some clips in Apple Final Cut pro and then authoring a DVD. Is your concern over image refreshing speed and picture quality ?

I am playing around with a Macmini in my CT office and me accesing it from JHB. Its working well using the LogMeIn service however huge lags. I also tried Apple's remote desktop but it can be finniky with my load balancer and VPN connections.

Ultimately, I will be using both PC and Mac to access the Mac in the US

Why don't you edit and create the video here and upload instead? Or is it going to be that huge a file?

Regarding US internet account, let the rep sort it out over there.

That's what I was going to ask. But I guess if you are going to use up a full (single layer) DVD, a 4.4GB file would be quite a bit to upload (from SA) ;) Although, you can use something like www.filedropper.com and get by without having to pay for any special hosting.

Also, www.logmein.com is an alternative to VLCs, etc. I've tried it out (although Windows-to-Windows, no Macs) and it works pretty well.

I would also not want to do video editing remotely - you simply won't get the responsiveness (and image refresh rate, as you say) that would be needed to do it comfortably/easily.

Yup, its going to be pretty much a full DVD so just imagine if I need to create 4 different DVd's... that's 4 x Telkom 4 Gb contracts !!!:sick:

Yup, I've got LogMeIn working although helluva slow so sticking to Apple Remote Desktop and will use LogMeIn as my backdoor just incase I lose connectivity with remote desktop.

Thanks for the advice so far ! Will be organising it this week and keep you posted.
