Hi Guys

I am new here..

What challenges do we face with hosting on ADSL.I have a site that gets 10 000 hits a month and I need to have the server next to me

Thanks
Lucky

I think you're much better off using a professional host as oposed to hosting the site yourself, 10 000 hits a month is not that much, you can find a host for $10.00 or less a month.

In order to host the site yourself you need to have static IP, and considering the fact thet Telkom's ADSL is working only whenever it feels like it, your site will be off quite often ;)

hrm.. no idea i suppose it depends more on the throughput requirements, keep in mind that usage is currently both the up and down traffic. ie you could be hosting and use up your 3GB without downloading a thing.

Asside from the cap stuffs the only thing that might be hassle is ip addresses but really thats easy to sort with a good dynamic dns update provider and program. Also the average number of sulmutaneous connections combined with (again) the avg through put will help decide which of the 3 adsl packages to go for 64k(192), 192k?(384), 256k(512). Since 1024 gives 256k i doubt you need to consider it.

Hosting on ADSL - short answer, don't do it for anything important..

I agree with donaldza mission critical hosting should
not be done on DSL, rather Leased Line from IS, UUnet $$$,
Hetzner offer an excellent service where this forum is hosted
or Hosting in the US is still the cheapest
Checkout http://www.flexihostings.net/www2/

Host my Garden Route webcam site with 120 000 page
views/month and 8 Gb bandwidth for R60/month (too $$$ in SA)
gives me 60 Gb bandwidth & 900 Mb Diskspace

Testing a Pan/Tilt/Zoom cam on top of the Outeniqua Mountains
overlooking George and Oudtshoorn post some pics later on the website

I totally agree. DSL just isn't reliable enough!

Remember if you're phone monthly rental is not paid to Telkom
your phone service is suspended and so is your ADSL access.

Lovely thought for your hosted server ie Us once.
