Hosting

Love that, i was with a overseas host that went under and it was rather inconvienant to say the least.

Same here, I hosted with Hosting 4u (or something like that), local office with servers in the Netherlands, great going until the day I tried to log on and .... nothing. Not a trace of the local guys, my website gone, theirs gone, just dissapeared without a trace. Well, suppose Daddy won't go so easily, and you can't lose for $3/month, can you?

Valid arguments for sure, I dont dispute that. If you can afford to host locally then it has to be a good option no doubt. I cant, not with the bandwidth requirment i am looking for.
I had a good few problems with uploading data to international sites using a host of ftp clients (cuteftp, ftppro) and broswer interfaces(including the sites own broswer upload interface). Since I have been using FileZilla client the speeds are great. I dont know why but it works all the time when the others dont.

An US client asked me last year to have a look at their website at godaddy.com, what a painful experience that was. The main website was painfully slow and it took me ages just to log into the admin services. At the same time Crystaltech.com was running normally and I could get some work done. Moral of the story? Pay $10/month more and host with a service that doesn't have thousands of other users trying to use the server at the same time.

If you need to upload numerous, bulky files try www.smartftp.com. The program has a multi-threading queing option that makes a major difference with mulitple uploads.

PS Can't wait for something to happen on the ADSL scene that is worthwhile discussing ...

Must agree on the godaddy slowness. I managed to read most of this thread, while it loaded in the background - I got as fas as the banner links on the top before I killed it.

I use totalchoicehosting.com for a dedicated fully manged box at 219 dollars / month/ unlimted sql/accounts and 1000 gigs traffic - support is good - biggest problem is time difference

For an international host I can recommend www.exabytes.com - excellent features, great speed, excellent 24x7 support, and all at a great price. I've been with them for a few years now and am very happy. They have Win2k3 and Linux options.
