House renovation/fixes: Actual costs thread

Personally, I struggle every time to find a reasonable costs involved in any renovation/fix done in and around the house. Generally it involves creating a new thread here and getting 3-4 quotes etc but then I generally forget what the costs were in about a year's time. I am starting this thread in order to compile all the costs. I would appreciate if you guys could chip in if you think it is a good idea. I have kept format as below for now (comma separated so that this can be available as excel download later on if there is lot of input). Any input will be really appreciated.

Month-Year, Details, Type of expense, Price, Area, Time required, Province/Area/Suburb, comments
August 2014, double garage sanding + warnish 2 coats, labour, standard size, 500, 1 day, Johannesburg
October 2014, House painting exterior + wooden window brackets sand and polish, Labour, 180m2, 6000, 8 days, Johannesburg, Labour includes sanding/cleaning/post job cleanup

It's a good idea - the problem I've found is that often these guys quote on a whim. It's how they feel on the day (excluding materials)

Absolutely, some are real chancers, however my idea is to mention the actual costs involved and/or quotes that I finalized (even if I did not actually incur the costs).
 
I always break things down when I get quotes....

And I do materials on my own dime, so their quote is purely for labour... and if I feel its on the steep side for the job they get told to take a hike.
 
For info purposes. I had to fix my patio. New screed and retiling. 15m2

Labour. R2500. 2 1/2 days of work. Think I overpaid a bit, but the guys were really good
Screed. 35 bags. @ R40 a bag
Tiles. R100/m2. R1500
Wife wanting fancy little tiles: R1500
Other stuff eg grout, sealant R900
 
I want to have my pallisade fence re-painted. Its rusty now. Syard size is approx 600m2
 
You seriously overpaid for the labour...

R166 per sqm for tiling... I wouldn't go above R100

Maybe. The patio foundation dropped, so they had to fix that first. And trust me. That was a job and a half. I realized. It was in a total of 3 1/2 days. Where 2 days was just fixing the foundation.
 
Ahh that is a different story then... probably about right cost wise

I paid R70 per sqm about 3 weeks ago...

So I would say anything from R70 - R150 per sqm would be reasonable, the R150 per sqm one would have to be bloody good at their job.

oh wow. So tiling rates are cheaper than 7 years ago?
