My adsl installation was - or rather still is- scheduled for tomorow - 29 nov- yet got my adsl before that! How?

Yesterday I decided to test out the modem and put the filters etc in place, to try to do the self-install. upon plugging in the modem, instead of a flashing green light showing that I am unconnected, the flight was steady!!!

I then realized what must have happened.

On the 15th of this month, a project was undertaken to install more adsl port at our exchange. Ever since that day, our phone line was sounding funny, rather like someone has picked up another phone on the same line.

It seems that they plugged in my line to the adsl port, from that day.

And thats how I have adsl, without a techkie, without going through a fight for self-install which is "unavailable" here in Durban!!

Maybe you other guys who are waitng for their adsl should plug in their modems and try their luck.

How do you guys think it happened?
Either they did it by mistake, or maybe did it to save coming round on the 29th to do it again or maybe..... Telkom is giving free trials of Adsl to sample it!!!

Ok, we all know the last one is impossible.

Quickly - call them up and insist on a self-install and save the r404 they'll charge!

F%% that, cancel it alltogether man! Worst case scenario you score a few months of ridiculous line rental...its a bad time to be on adsl at the moment anyway. but do test with an isp acc first :)

Same thing happened to me in CT.

I guess the guys that set up the exchange do the month all in one shot, but it takes time to go from house to house.

ABU - How Long

ABU, i have asked for dsl and they have phoned me back and said yes you can have. How long after that does it take? The other thing is i have asked for the self-install option which they said wasn't avalible in dbn yet " but they will see if they can do it like that" Muahaha

If it is a normal installation it might be working, check it out with an isp account. When my line was installed, they told me it will take a month more but after complaining that very week-end i heard noise on the line and thought hrm, mebbe its done, and BAM! 512/256k line for a week or two till came out and marked it as completed and line speed was set to what i ordered. The techie was like wtf, when he saw i was set up already. You can't do squat in terms of free bandwidth cause you need an isp account to get access.

When I applied, they said that were offering the self-install option in the past, however it is no more being offered!!!
I told her that she is speaking nonsense, as I know people who had the self-install done that very week.

She then changed the tune and said : "O well...... some exchanges offer it and others don't, and yours doesn't offer it." When I said that all exchanges support it, and asked to know whats the difference between my exchange and others, she said that she doesn't know if mine supports it or not, a techkie will contact me.

It then took 18 days for more ports to be installed on our exchange and my install date was 2 weeks after that.

My advise to you is to phone daily, logging the calls and make sure you get the name of the person taking your call.

If you can, download a call recorder and record the calls. It might help later.

Some people do need to get the actual techie to come in. THey have to change the wall sockets... can't remember why but with us they said we could do the self install but we would have a problems on some of our extensions because they were using an old socket or something... amazingly we never got charged for the new sockets :) But hey, my line did get installed a month and a half earlier then installation date so I shouldn't complain ;)

I just spoke to the guys that is comming to do the install tomorrow and they said I must plug in the Router and check if I am online. They say the port at the exchange is up and the guys that do the install just check the quality of the line. So I am off to have a look this evening.

yup, thats right. the reason the techie comes out is to check quality of the line and to see if the service you want(speed) is obtainable with some leeway. Self install does the same. Other than checking if correct jack is on, and perhaps fix a wet/bad joint indoor, or faulty extentions there is not much for them to do. oh yah they also put in the filters though thats as simple as pluging in a plug/light bulb.

Keep in mind the techies also are equipped to find other faults that could cause problems like problems at the joints on the poles/house, and the street boxes and stuff cause pots connections are not as fussy as the adsl.

Well thats telkom for you ANOTHER BROKEN PROMISE, did they even phone you try and reschedule. I don't think so, thats what we call great customer service.
