How ALLYOUCANEAT and AXXESS do it! (& Philosophical mumbo jumbo)

How does allyoucaneat and axxess afford selling 30GB for ~R600?

My only conclusion is that they buy it from Telkom at <R60/3GB.

Why can't we?

Please support this answer by explaining in excruciating detail.

I'm sure they are (ab)using the "local not capped" loophole. And that is why Telkom decided to cap local as well, because they are losing money.

And how did you come to that conclusion?

I don't think they use the local uncapped thing!

As far as I know the 10-30GB accounts are exactly the same (going through the same route) as the standard Telkom accounts, so they are identical in any aspect but with bigger cap.

yep, it's been stated over and over again that these accounts are (basically) saix accounts, so I don't think they're using the local uncapped thing.

tunas well imagine the whole of jhb population could buy bandwidth at cost what would happen to isp's imagine going to buy computers at cost suga tea coffee why would we need spar so if they are getting at 60 rand they should sell it what they like so they can make money

and i think 580 for 30 gigs is a damn good price

tell how they could use local bandwidth to help me surf international websites?

Well say I am an ignoramus who does run an ISP and do want to buy it from them. Just hoping someone could save me the hassle to figure it our for myself.

As for your Spar analogy... its all about effeciency. Not everyone can go to 50 different places to buy 50 different products.

With ADSL and internet howerver, you can.

People who must now make a living of finding good deals with idiots, could have better spent their time developing something better for the future, than financially masturbating with telkom in their beeg bad !@#( SA orgy truck.

When the next cataclysm comes, we're all gonna die for lack of having developed better technology. Furthered science. Wasting our minds on ways to counter others' greed and stupidity, rather than spending it on the riddles of nature. People suck. But lets not get philosphical.

Well, lets do. Come lets rip apart this statement:

"An economy where success is based on the protection of trade secrets, is fundamentally corrupt."

That translates to "Any business for the sake of busiuness is evil".

That translates to "This world and civilisation is in a real sorry state."

Whats gonna become of us?

Maybe if the AIDS virus did evolve naturally, a similar mental virus will evolve naturally to kill off inefficient idiots. Or maybe whoever designed it will design the latter.

Let me see if I can rename this thread and move it to "the meaning of life, the universe, and stupid replies"

Buy a SAIX National-International Dedicated Access to the tune of 2MB.
This will give you the facility to provide 512 Garauntee'd international bandwidth.
and buy a smaller LOCAL-ONLY pipe form SAIX and that is your local backbone.

Or - Buy a 512 international only from SAIX, and a 1MB Local + Intl mix, and use clever routing to provide the required service level.

Point is - anybody can buy a SAIX line, pay for the diginet connection, and resell it. You've just got to get enough customers to make the resell work.

NOTE: These lines don't care about the amount of bandwidth actually downloaded.

BTW. Youre not gonna get one of these lines from UUNET or SAIX for under <R30 000. And then it is only 512k intl/2Mb national. Already with a 1:5 contention ratio. Share that on ADSL. What do you get? Say... youve got 100 clients. That would be R30000/100 = R300 per user. They each get 0.05 bytes per second download speed should they all simultaneously log on.

I dont think this is what any ISPs are doing. Maybe in the OLD days.
Before telkom could buy one big Cisco box that could handle all SA's modem connections. Or ADSL Connections.

Vpn

Hi everyone. Are most ISPs not just running a clever VPN solution using (as mentioned) the local uncapped solution. SAIX has the VPN Supreme and the standard solution but their 3 GB capped offer costs around R 170 + VAT. The only way I see they could work it is to route it via vpn over adsl to a central Server that is plugged into an International traffic line (+- 512 or 2 MB , or the like) and then route it as an uncapped solution. Maybe thats why SAIX is capping the local bandwidth to stop this? Any ideas??

If it was VPN you need to have an existing account before you can use the VPN service, so no, I doubt that.

I also doubt they've bought their own bandwidth. As it has been mentioned many times, some companies signed contracts with Telkom BEFORE they imposed the cap. Most of them are "exploiting" this to their advantage to provide ADSL access to the masses with no cap (which has since changed to 30gig because Telkom felt a huge hit)

If you have a question, use the SEARCH function of this forum, you will find ALOT of information.

how they do it

i reckon they're working on the principle that most people won't ever really do 1 gig a day of traffic.

this means that if you have a 30gb cap, and 100 people using it, its fair to say that less than 5% of them are going to be hitting that kind of traffic. its just a matter of running the numbers.

from what i heard, telkom are putting brakes on 30gb, and that there'll be no higher caps allowed... but that's just heresay

I would tend to agree on the 5% of users using over 1 GB a day. most users use only about 1 to 3 GBs a month. Only IT people, designers, web developers, etc use alot more than that. Most dont surf much but as the internet gets used for other stuff it will increase I bet. But, there is still alot of take-up to happen by users before it will happen. Most (I say this gently) people over +-40 dont use the internet much, whereas a majority of youngsters, esp guys do (mostly porn an music surfing I bet). So, it depends on demand.

But, it will be interesting to see how things develop in SA. Thans for the tip on the search I will check it out.

Iesh, lots of misconceptions.

Providers like UUNet and IS buy a link into SAIX's ADSL cloud (VPN supreme or whatever its called). When their clients are authenticated they are routed through this connection to the relevant provider.

The high cap providers purchase higher bandwidth accounts from SAIX in 3Gb incrememnts afaik. What stops average joe from doing this is that 1) You need a connection to SAIX and your own RADIUS server. 2) You have to purchase the accounts in blocks. If SAIX were going to let anyone buy accounts off them at next to nothing they would get in trouble, they are a carrier and are not allowed to undercut the people that buy from them. The conflict is that Telkom (who essentialy own SAIX) also sell the accounts - but their prices are in line with the rest.

I think it's time for MyADSL ISP to be born. Just for myadsl members. Surely we could also have an agreement to buy our bandwidth from SAIX at a way cheaper price if bought in bulk?

probably find the current ISP's are running very near cost including maintainence etc... its alot more work than you'd think to just sommer buy some VISP accounts and resell them

VISP easier than you think

Actually, I've heard a lot about VISP's. It is actually quite easy if you organise the billing properly.

People like Imaginet actually offer you the opportunity to brand your own isp. I've been thinking about it, start a cool isp that doesn't do tech support - so only uber l33t people sign up, and then we charge cost +10%? would you sign up for that? *cackle*

seriously though, I'm sure its hard work running an ISP, but if you get a good setup like Imaginet's - its probably easy. Check itout on

This isp is really starting to impress me !
