The reason I ask is because I bought an entire NEW cheapy PC 6 months ago for R2200 ... Celeron D 1.6ghz, 512MB RAM and 320GB HDD.

I thought I'd buy a 2nd 320GB HDD for the same machine and got the quote from the same shop : R1400.00 !

Surely they couldn't be that pricey if I bought an entire system for R800.00 more only 6 months ago? :/

How are RAM prices and other components?

I dont think RAM and HDD prices will be hit hard. Mainly processors, motherboards and graphics cards.

Actually ... some of my hard drive prices came down :P ... like Cad says ... Processors, Motherboards and Gfx cards went up.

So what sorta price is a 320GB HDD? :/

Did I get a good price up front - or am I getting ripped now?

Most/all PC components come from China anyway, so you have to look at the Rand -> Yen exchange rate, rather then Rand -> Dollar.

prices have been steady to down since the beginning of the year

Down? Yeah right ... I sold a E8400 and Asus P5K this week at a loss, cause customer placed it on back order and then prices went up. I can't charge the oak ... its not his fault. He already paid. Should hopefully start coming down soon though.

get ur hdd from accomp.co.za they just behind cresta.. stu got one there recently can ask him to show u where

well the stuff on my wishlist with sybaritic sees me getting endless emails of price decreases. haven't seen a price increase and i have a few different items on that wishlist. And actually your point supports what I was saying as the op was asking from a consumer perspective and not a supplier one.
