How can I do this...

Ok, so what the situation is, I have DOTA 2 installed on my PC via a Steam gift, now my neighbour wants DOTA 2 and I told him i have a few DOTA Gifts left and i could simply give him one. But he is capped (and cant download the game twice(him and his brother))

So what i was thinking could I backup the DOTA 2 game via the steam menu onto his external, then he copies it into his Steam folder and accepts the gift...will this work or is my key/gift embedded with my back up?

It will work but no your key is not embedded with your backup. You will need to gift him the game in order for it to be activated on his Steam profile. It'll then show up in his Steam Games (he doesn't need to click install at this point). You give him the backup and he just does a restore from that.

Not sure if it'll still work, but what I used to do (being in the same internet bundle situation) was get the download going to create all the necessary folders and such, exit Steam, copy all the relevant game folders from a mate's pc and restart Steam. It would then update all the newly found files and folders and we'd be A for away.

There was only one huge update (2Gb) that I had, from there on the updates were 100mb - 200mb

You should just use steams internal backup and restore process, its only the files it does none of your personal data/keys.

Updates are usually on Thursday night GMT + 8 (I think), so Friday morning SAST. Updates are around 200MB with only one update of 2GB.

ALl you need to do it copy the Dota 2 beta folder over into his steamapps/common/ folder
(make sure hes steam is closed while u do this)
secondly copy the various Appmanifest files from your steam to his

let him start steam and wala done
(he can accept the steam gift before or after)
