I have a computer with 128k Ram. Many years ago, my son installed a cracked version of XP, which ran painfully slow. Now I want to donate the machine to a worthy casue, but first I want to re-install the legit 98se. However:

1) when I click on format, the machine will not allow me to reformat the hard drive.

2) I tried installing 98se by putting the cd in the drive but it won't allow this either.

3) Finally I tired rebooting the machine with the 98se cd in the drive. No luck there either.

San someone please tell me what to do? Thanks.

format the hdd via the windows xp install

if you know alot about pc's put the hdd in another computer and format it from that OS

Did you select CD-Rom as the first boot device in the BIOS?

Is the installation disc bootable?
If it isn't, you'll need a boot disk with cdrom drivers (google it) to get to a dos prompt. From there you can format the partition (it needs to be fat32), and then maybe run the installation off the cd, or first copy the win98 setup files onto the harddrive.

If the disc is bootable, I think you can quit the setup and be left with a dos prompt from which you could format the harddrive... after formating, reboot from the cd and setup should run fine.

OK, firstly you need more ram than 128k. You probably mean 128MB. Secondly you need to boot from the 98SE disk or create a boot stiffy using the appropriate from this site. http://www.bootdisk.com/

Then you need to use FDISK to delete the partition and create a new primary partition using the FAT32 file system. You will then be able to install 98SE

The Win98Se CD is bootable, just make sure that you get you BIOS set, to boot from the CDROM first, you will have the selection to format the drive.

Otherwise just FDisk it with the same cd.
