i noticed a massive spike in data usage yesterday, but cannot say for certain which device is the culprit. Not sure if its xbone, ps4, or laptop as they were all on and all have background downloads enabled. my kids may have also been watching youtube or downloading stuff.

how can i track data usage per device/mac ? I have a telkom netgear router.

What os on laptop? I know windows 10 doing loads of updates at the moment

A possible solution with other users also sharing their options :)

Okay, this isn't a definitive answer but simply one of many and i will try to explain as best as i can [am not the best at explaining so bare with me] :).

I personally love the Ubiquiti UniFi-AP range of products but i like the LongRange one which will set you back R1259.00 excl vat but you may enquire with kernel if the mybroadband discount still applies ;). He is a dealer for dbg. I personally recommend the Long Range model just to ensure you are covered as much as can be without knowing too much of your setup.

You can do some of the following:

*Uses PoE so no power adaptor needed wherever you put the device :).
*Setup individual speed profiles for each device. Changes can be made on the fly.
*Guest network with limited data or time-limit [friends coming over].
*Deploy the software to track status in the cloud with Amazon AWS free tier [at work, see what is using data in realtime]. If you choose not to do this, you need to run the controller software upon boot all the time. I personally don't do this as i had some issues due to java when upgrading between versions. Your miles may vary though. I also had mine setup as a windows service but that did not resolve my issue.

I currently have mine setup using Amazon's service and can give you access to have a look at how things work. Am running an older version of the software but the core functions remain the same. This is v3.1.10 [i am not sure how to upgrade to latest without losing historical data] heh

Apologies if this isn't what you looking for :o.

Edit: Forgot to add - PS4 Firmware 2.55 went live yesterday which should account for around 244MB and if you have GTAV then the PS4 update around 6GB also?

How technical are you? I have a Linksys e1200 router - R594 from Takealot http://www.takealot.com/linksys-e1200-wireless-n-router/PLID29891461.

Here is the tricky part! You need to install the Tomato firmware on it, once you have that you have a VERY powerful router that allows you to track exactly what IP is using what data... very handy indeed. There are a host of other very powerful and useful features that can be handy if you have kids too... limit bandwidth... in fact outright switch it off on certain devices at certain times...

The downside of this is that you need to be reasonably technical to get the whole thing running.. once it is set up its easy... so if you are not a techie then perhaps you know of someone who is?

PS: You will still need an ADSL modem but you'd have one of those anyway since I guess you're already connected .. I run my cheapie TP-Link in bridge mode to the Linksys after that the Linksys handles ISP accounts and everything else. ...

get netlimiter on the pc,so u can see what the pc use,and then the left over should be the xbox or ps4

switch two offline unless you need it, then use prepaid wifi sim on that one to see. there's probably even an android app to check each Ip's use but routing back to your wifi probably impossible without rooting anyway. My bet is on the consoles doing background updates.
