I have a shared adsl account and both my home and business use it. Both accounts are up to 2048Kbps
On Saturday evening between the hours 7pm and 8pm, the download at the business was 3gigs (in 1 hour)
Normally it would take at least a day to download this amount of data.
But no-one was at the premises.
If one of the the computers had been compromised, the download speed could never have achieved this.
I do have wifi - but the ethernet is slow and would not have allowed this much data to pass through.

Can anyone explain to me how this breach could have happened?

That's impossible. Even if you were using both accounts at the same time you still could not get 3GB down in one hour.

You haven't perhaps been upgraded or something?
