How Chappies bubblegum can help you understand inflation

Anyone who turns on the news occasionally will know that the word ‘inflation’ crops up quite frequently, says Kondi Nkosi, South Africa country head at global asset manager, Schroders. But what does it actually mean and why should we be bothered about what’s gone up and what’s come down?

For millennials – sometimes said to be the most nostalgic generation – an example of inflation that gets their attention is the price increases of their childhood favourite bubblegum, Chappies, noted Nkosi.

I think that should read Gen X's ..... but none the less

I remember my old man, telling me that with 5c he could go to the movies, buy ice cream and a juice and have 4c change :) or something similar ......

They were like 1c in the 80s, how could they have been 1c 40 years prior?

There was also no rand back in the 40's.

Old folks, any chance that Chappies bubblegum cost 1 penny or 1 farthing in the 40's amd the article made a conversion error?

Actually, the best inflation was with Wicks King Size Bubblegum. They were twice as expensive as Chappies, but blew very superior bubbles.
Bubble yum I think was the best. They once gave you a set of cardboard scissors to measure the size of the bubbles.

Clearly you never read the inside of their labels.
Hehe. You're right. The last time I physically handled a Chappies must've been the late 70s, before leaving to study in England.

Many Greek cafés would use them as currency, giving you two Chappies change when they wanted to save their 1c coins.

I was never a gum chewer, so swapped them out for hard cash.
