This morning I dial *136# and it talks me through to buying 1GB Data4Keeps for R160. Next thing I've got data

They will deduct from your airtime balance, not add anything on when you buy, iirc.

You probably had airtime to start with. Like R200. So you buy R160 more airtime and they deduct R160 from your R200 balance and give you another R160 fresh airtime. It's always good to keep the airtime fresh, there's nothing worse than the smell of someone's voice when they're using stale airtime. Anyway, that's how I figure they do it

R160 for 1GB of data seems really expensive even if it lasts for 1 year! I'm sure that they will take the money from your airtime balance.
