How did you get started?

For me it was System V Unix at university and Slackware at home in the 90’s. I can’t recall which one I used first.

All the coursework after 1st year was Unix based. In my 2nd year and honours year I worked on the Silicon Graphics machines running IRIX. My first job was based on multiple flavours of Unix too. My current job is all Linux.

I haven’t met Torvald yet, but I do know a few key Linux kernel people. I’ve also had the (dis)pleasure of meeting Richard Stallman.
Unpleasant figure huh ?

Used the VAX at uni and then started messing around with slackware in the early 90's. Was confusing as hell coming from Winblows - remember buying one of those teach yourself linux in 21 days books. Still have it somewhere.

Heh. Check out the controversies section on his Wikipedia page and get back to me.
I have followed his saga since way back when. Let me guess you got beef with Eric Raymond too?

These guys are the godfathers of opensource gnu .etc the landscape would be very different without them as “unique” as they may be.

Show some respect.

Seems a bit more. From his behaviour I personally think he is on the spectrum as he is unable to read social queue.

Still a damn good programmer and contributed more than most will in their life time to the progress of software.

Imagine a world with only proprietary software. No chance of being able to build on the knowledge of others. Live or hate him he played a huge part.

I’ll admit that he put free software months or years ahead, but he’s still a complete ass.

Meh. That’s like saying that if AOL never existed, we wouldn’t have social media.

No. He’s not a religious zealot, and has a very measured opinion on free and open source software.

No. Stallman is a net negative.

Agree but he still deserves respect for what he accomplished.

That’s a bit of a stretch.

Perhaps in the past, not now.

Go read up on that about your idol.
