So we have been using the Billion wireless modem from MWEB for the last couple of years but it packed up recently.

Looking around I see wireless modems ranging in price from R600 up to almost R3 000, and now I am not so sure what to buy.

The Billion's wireless range seemed very limited, I only managed to pick up WiFi in the closest bedroom to the TV room where it was located (living room in between). I need something with reasonable WiFi range without spending a load of money.

Which modem (brand and model) do you suggest I get? Is it perhaps a good alternative to get a cheap wireless modem and a signal booster?

I would recommend a TP-Link W8980 if you are looking for a good feature packed ADSL router - it has dual band wifi and gigabit ethernet. You can get them from Uniterm Direct (http://www.dbg.co.za/product_info.php?cPath=1_55_57&products_id=922).

If you plan on upgrading to VDSL services sometime soon, then your choices are limited but the Pace modem that Telkom sells seems to be pretty good too - while it doesn't have dual band wifi it does have gigabit ethernet and a bunch of other features you probably won't use. You can pick these up at Telkom shops for R1249. These devices support both ADSL and VDSL.

When you say "packed up" what do you mean? Can it still go on? If so you can use it to compliment the new one to distribute the wireless signal throughout your house

Hi

I Have a DLink DSL-2750U for the past year. Great range +-100meters, R799 at Telkom shop.

Just some feedback on my experiences with Telkom's *** modems. Got a Netgear on Saturday morning, this piece of shyte was resetting itself every 20 minutes! Even after the software upgrade.

Then on Sunday morning, got a Pace modem from them! Set up was very quick and simple. However, modem disconnects from internet every 30 minutes or so. Called Telkom, they recreated the port, but still doing it. Will take it back tommorow.

I've had a good experience with my Pace modem so far. Hasn't gone down once since I got it - then again I disabled the wifi so that may be causing your issues.

I would recommend my current adsl modem, the netgear dgn2200v2 (telkom branded). From the first day when I got it for free with my Telkom bundle it has been giving great coverage and performance for our 4 devices in the house.

If you can afford to pay more please buy yourself an ASUS adsl modem since ASUS offers a solid wifi connection. I use my rt n66u to bridge the adsl connection from netgear modem so am speaking out of experience.
