it is an avi movie file and i looked and cant find any programme that is using this file

is there any other way to delete this movie file?

R50 says Unlocker detecting the "offending" program was explorer.exe ;)

This happens because Explorer is trying to access the details of the movie file (resolution, play length, etc), but there's a problem with the codec that Explorer is using to access the file.

If you pull up your task manager when this happens again, you'll notice Explorer maxing out (1 core of) your CPU.

If you don't have Unlocker or a similar tool, you can just terminate the explorer.exe process (NOTE: terminating explorer.exe has other implications), start a Command Prompt and delete the file the "old way". Then restart Explorer.

most of the time you can also get away with just re-naming it and then nuking it.

Will unlocker work for vista 64bit?

I haven't seen it working well on Vista, running Vista Ultimate 32bit and it doesn't seem to work like XP, it wants to restart the pc in order to delete the file, really bogus if you ask me.

In Vista however, right click and view the files properties, make sure there are no "deny" policies in place, that stops you from deleting a stubborn file. The Adobe Flash.ocx file is a bugger to delete off Vista, it has these deny policies ;)

You can't rename a file if you can't get exclusive access to it.

Trust me, I have had the issue many many many times with movie files, re-name and delete works very well *most of the time*

Find someone who runs Linux. They can put the disk in their PCs and remove the file for you. I have done the same for friends who had the same trouble.

I have had the same thing as Juggy, I found overwriting the file tends to give me access to it again (usually just rename a blank txt in another folder then cut&paste over the offending file)
