I use Kerio personal firewall and they have also build into the program speed indicators.

To test local speeds use the Telkom speedtest at http://www.telkom.co.za/minisites/dsl/speed.html and select the http test.

For international, use http://www.internetfrog.com/mypc/speedtest/

Best bet is to start a FTP download and check what your phone is reporting as download speed. IMHO, this is the most accurate way of doing this..

Yup, what i like to do is just a wget from the console to ftp.is.co.za . But thats the same as ScrnScrm said ...
