How do I free up memory on my C drive?

Dumbass question, but my lap says I've only 107 MB of Disc space (out of 20 GB) left on C drive and it needs at least 200MB to run stable (XP SP2)

D drive has 49 GB space available out of 70GB

What programs are the biggest memory hoggers which I can dump? or transfer to D Drive or should I allow the compress file function to do its thing?
Suggestions please....and thanks in advance
 
Usually check here :

c:\Documents and Settings\onebrick\My Documents\My Videos\Secret Porn Stash.... this is usually the biggest culprit! :)
 
Try deleting Temp files

Go to run, type %temp%

delete everything in that folder
 
First suggestion is to run a general disk cleanup:
Start -> Programs -> Accessories -> System Tools -> Disk Cleanup
(from the classic menus)
Gets rid of all the temporary files, etc...

Next, uninstall any unused programs...

Under disk cleanup, you can also erase all but the latest System Restore entry - this may create a bit of space...
 
backup and reload your pc

thats the easiest way to clean your drive, then all your backup info is no longer on the drive
 
at command prompt/run, type:

cleanmgr /sageset:99 <enter>

select the file types you want to clean out. OK to close.

then at command prompt/run, type:

cleanmgr /sagerun:99 <enter>

This will clean out the stuff you selected.

Also, delete old Restore Points.

These steps generally free up a couple of gig. Then manually work through your user files and deleted old/obsolete/duplicated stuff.
Then run a chkdsk and reboot.
