My adsl is to be installed next week - so they say- and as I opted for the self-install option I am intend on getting just that from Telkom.

But seeing all the post here saying that that option is "not available" in Kzn, I am getting worried.

Any ideas on how to force it out of Telkom?

It there any real differences between the exchanges, that a self-install in Kzn would be different from one elsewhere?

What about making a claim of unfair discrimination against resedents of Kzn at the Constitutional Court?

Yep - agreed. I am also in Durban and wanted to do the self-install but it isn't available here. Some cr@p about backup contractors etc etc...blah, blah. So don't waste your time - they say it may be available by the end of December...hahaha

That's bollocks. I "did self install" when it wasn't available in Cape Town, they're talking cr@p. Go down to your local Telkom shop, buy your POTS filters and stick them in bam! it's done, don't answer the door when they come by.

Go into the closest telkom shop and tell them you're doing the self install, don't ask me why one has to go into the shop... but that's what I've been told too over the phone. Don't get fooled into a contract or modem and if you have an ADSL modem already all they need to know is that's an approved one.

You need to go to the shop to buy the Filters.

There is nothing else to the self install (Except a modem/router of course). You put a filter between any NON-ADSL router object (handset, fax, etc) and the wall socket, and you put the ADSL router directly into the socket. When your lines ready the modem ADSL light wil come on, when you have an ISP account, the PPP light will go on.

That's all there is to it.
