As noted in my other thread I've decided to get Vodacom 3G.

I'm using this forum, not only to get some assistance (which I must thank you all for in advance), but also to chronicle my quest so that those hapless souls to follow in my footsteps may find the road a little smoother. So for those who help me out, thank you and my apologies if at times I post some info that is useless to you, this is intended to be useful to others.

So here is what I want to do (and if you read through that whole thread my reasons may be a bit clearer):
  1. Purchase the datacard outright (not on contract)
  2. Not pay any fixed monthly contract fee (I believe this should be possible with a Voda4U contract)
  3. Get a Linksys router to set up a home network (I may choose to only do this at a later stage)

As background info it is important to note that:
  1. I do not have a Vodacom SIM card or any type of Vodacom contract at present
  2. I do not have a handset capable of 3G/GPRS

Now I have a few questions and the obvious answer is of course to look for info on the website. And there's a handy FAQ with the question "How do I get 3G?" with the answer being "You need to sign a 24-month contract with Vodacom which will give you access to Vodacom's 3G and GPRS network."

As informative and helpful as that is, it doesn't really tell you anything, does it? So for those of you looking for similar info, don't even waste your time with the website.

Second try, go to a vodashop and ask them in person (because I don't like holding on for customer service). So to do this, find out where the nearest Vodashop is. You can quickly navigate to Outlets => Vodashops on the website. Only problem is, this page instructs you to call 125vodashop, which doesn't work from a Telkom line or an MTN cell phone. Smart.

Finally, call the customer service help line. After holding on for a bit (guessing, but let's say 5 min's), my call is answered and the gentleman (name withheld) tells me (1) that there is a Vodashop in Centurion where I am, (2) he cannot tell me where it is, because "it is not coming up on my computer". So instead of searching for the mysterious shop, I decide to ask him my questions:
  1. Can I purchase a datacard outright? Answer: Yes.
  2. How much would that cost? Answer (After some searching on the computer): I can't get it on my computer right now but I know it's more than R1000. Can I put you through to our 3G department and they'll be able to answer all your questions. Response: Yes please

After holding for about 30 minutes for 3G department I gave up.

So herewith my questions:
  1. How much would it cost me to buy a 3G/HSDPA datacard cash?
  2. Where can I buy it?
  3. Which one should I get? (I want to make sure I have 3G with HSDPA, I want to use it in a Linksys router and sometimes in my laptop and beyond that my needs are fairly basic)
  4. I would like to pay for usage as far as possible. In other words, if I don't use it for two months, I want those two months to cost me R0, is there any way of achieving this? (From that other thread it seems it would be by getting Voda4u and buying prepaid data bundles, but I just want to make sure)
  5. If I buy prepaid data bundles, is it true that data I don't use isn't carried forward to the next month? (something I picked up in that other thread again)
  6. Can I buy a Linksys router from Vodacom or a dealer directly and how much would that cost? (I can get it for R1603.31 from PCMall, so I would like to get it cheaper)
  7. Is there stock available (both datacard and Linksys router)?
  8. How quickly can I get all of this? (If there isn't stock of the Linksys router, then that can wait, but I'm keen to get on the air ASAP)

Firstly, the Vodacom recommended selling price of the HSDPA datacard is
R2699 (you may be able to negotiate a better price tho)

Prepaid data bundles are only available from July this year (we hope), so if u are on prepaid, you will pay out of bundle rates: R2 per meg.

The cost of the router (as paid by the stores) is R1595 incl. vat. so I don't think you will get it much cheaper... BUT the HSDPA cards will not work in the router until June 2006 when the new firmware is released.

If you want it sooner than July my suggestion would be as follows:

Take a messenger contract (R35 per month)
This means you only pay in R1595 for the HSDPA card, including cost of sim card
You add adhoc bundles (these last 30 days) and you can add them whenever you like, various sizes from 20mb to 10gb.
Should you choose to send sms' from the dashboard, these will only cost 23cents per sms - this is generally an sms package.

2nd option is Family topup, datacard free, comes with R135 and costs the same. When prepaid data bundles come out you can then add them, but until then, you pay R2 per mb. Big plus is the saving of the cost of the datacard. Unused airtime accumulates up to 5 months worth.

Hope this helps!

Stock is available of both datacard and router - any Vodashop or Vodacom4u store.
Current data bundles last 30 days, prepaid one's (when available) will probably be similar, but if you add a bundle before your prepaid bundle runs out (say on the 29th day) it will extend your balance for another 30 days, along with the additional bundle.

You can also load databundles onto a 4U contract, there is zero monthly subscription if you don't take CLI or itemised billing (otherwise R28 for both). If you cancel the contract they don't charge you penalties as with other contracts. You can decide not to make any calls or use the internet for up to 90 days after which your contract will automatically be suspended.

You guys are quick. Thanks.

In my other thread someone suggested that stock levels of HSDPA cards are low and this might cause a holdup. I suspect I'm going to have to contact a shop directly to find out if they have stock, but as per my original post above, I have not been able to get numbers/locations in my area.

Doesn't work on Firefox for me though

Vodashop Menlyn Park will definitely have, also try Centurion and Hatfield. Numbers are:

Menlyn Park (012) 348 1672
Centurion mall (012) 663 8676
Hatfield (012) 342-3261

Ok, just spoke to someone at the Vodashop in Centurion. They've got the datacard, but they cannot help me with Voda4u contract as they are not a Voda4u store. Doesn't really make sense to me but ok.

Back to square 1, finding a Voda4u store...

Google doesn't seem to know about them.

They don't need 2 be a Vodacom4u store, any approved dealership or franchise can sign up a Vodacom 4u contract, it is just a tariff... Tell them to call the trade partner help desk if they don't know.

Have u tried booble.com ? :D

No, but our proxy blocks it, so no luck there.

Gave Vodashop in Menlyn a call now, they also claim they can't do the Voda4u contract, but at least could give me a number for the voda4u store in Menlyn (012-3480075), except that that number is engaged.

Ok got through on 012-3480075 and spoke to two rather clueless people neither of whom appeared to have ever heard of a 4U contract. Going to try the vodashop in Centurion again...

Also on Firefox ajax, so I've been there and thought it just didn't work. Will try IE if the Centurion store still can't help me.

The 4u contract was created mainly for contract clients wanting to go back to prepaid, but who want to keep their numbers, so it's not really a contract that the stores do often.

If you struggle, try doing it thru Vodacom Direct, and just buy the datacard from the store...

Datacard seems cheaper Novatel Wireless Merlin U740 HSDPA Wireless PC Data Card here. 5 days to ship anywhere in ZA, but a R700 saving over the price Vodashop Centurion gave me.

Question is, is this the right one? There seems to be a few options and I'm having a bit of trouble determining why some are so much more expensive/cheaper...

Don't know if I would buy it outside of SA, no support or warranty here, and it doesn't come with an external antenna.

I would try to see if I could negotiate them down to R2500, and spend the extra R500 for peace of mind knowing that if something goes wrong with the device in the next 2 years, they (Vodacare/Vodacom) will swap out your card. Your choice though...

If you add in the postage cost should you go the web route, it comes to R2389... MUCH better to buy locally, and you get it quicker, with all the latest software and firmware (it'll cost you more to download all this).

Nope, doesn't look like that will work. On Vodacom Direct, the first thing I have to choose is one of:
  1. I know what I want
  2. See best deals
  3. Budget deals
  4. Use our wizard

So I pick "I know what I want"

Then the first thing you have to do is select a handset, but there is no "No Handset" or "None" option. There is a "Vodafone" option and this does appear to show datacard-included contracts, but as I've already mentioned I don't want this.

I got hold of someone at the Vodashop in Centurion who said they would speak to the trade partner help desk and call me back.

Tell them to look on the back page of their contract brochure... right above blackberry contract.

I was told only the Vodacare shops do the 4U contracts. When I got to Vodacare in Canal Walk they sent me to Cellucity in Canal Walk who helped me with the contract.
