How do I prioritise gaming traffic?

I have a 2mb line and was playing DayZ standalone last night and realised that my erratic ping might be due to flat mates using their devices over the wireless...

I'm not expert with router configuring but I know a little. Is there a way of prioritising gamming traffic that works well? I have the Netgear N300 Telkom router. Is QoS or port forwarding an option? I have read somewhere else on this forum that QoS is not really enough on it's own...

I wanted to try and set up a QoS but the predefined rules made me laugh, like it was written in 1999 (Quake 2, Kazaa, Everquest, Age of Empires) no jokes! When I wanted to define a new QoS rule I wasn't sure which ports DayZ standalone uses. Here is a bit of a stupid question, the ports is set by the client and not the server right? In other words, regardless of which server you connect to the ports which are used by the game will stay the same? So here was my problem I couldn't find the ports to use.

So what are my options? Are there any effective options?

Best and simplest options would be to QOS based on the MAC Address rather than the Ports/Protocols.

Set that device's MAC to High and job done.

1) Open Utorrent
2) Highlight all downloads
3) Click Pause
4) Resume gaming.

Thanks, didn't know you set this by MAC address. I can't remeber seeing this option but will look again properly when I get home.

....but why not just close uTorrent? Three less steps! :D

Its works better if you set number of downloads to 0 in preferences and then click file --> exit.Paused downloads are still communicating.

OP just switch your wifi off when you play if you have that option.

I wish I could, but the flatmates also pay for the interwebs plus I'm also connecting wirelessly...

Then i doubt they will be happy you taking the lions share of the bandwidth?Or did you already ok this with them?

Anyways Saurons answer is the best, along with shutting down all apps that require net access while playing.

They just use their phones and tablets on it so mainly just browsing. I'm sure they'll still be able to browse might just be a wee bit slower.

I also need to see if it is actually that or if there is another problem with my connection.

the problem with most cheap QOS setups is that it can only give your traffic priority when the line is maxed out, and by the time that happens, you would already have had a latency spike.

Honestly I find when I game on the wifi on my 2 meg its really laggy but wired is fine? Perhaps thats the problem? Otherwise just prioritize your MAC address above others like mentioned above :)

It must have been Telkom ISP from the start since they still have probs. I did prioritise my MAC adress in the end too. I manage to play ok with a web africa account at least. But Telkom ISP is really sh** at the moment (like terrible), think I might need to ditch them soon.
