How do i setup winxp pro to be a server with a domain.so that other pcs conect to the domain

You can't, XP isnt a server platform. I'd recommend Windows 2000 Server or Advanced Server.

What do you need a domain controller for?

Not on XP, User Server 2000, 2003 etc. You don't need to be on a domain to link the PC's...

just make xp part of a workgroup of your choice, join the rest to the same workgroup, xp can be a server, any pc can be a server, but not a domain controller

If you want a Domain controller without Windows 2000/2003 Server then you will need to use Linux and Samba.
