How do I use Courier in Word 2010

I'm ready to take a bat to Billy Boy's head! 20 minutes of Googling and I'm no closer to an answer!

How hard can it be? I installed "Courier" to the font folder, but it disappeared into a black hole, never to be seen again, unless I try reinstall it - then, of course, Windows magically finds it and asks if I want to overwrite it.

"Courier regular" is right there and visible in the font folder, but not in Word's font list!

Anyone know of a solution?

It probably has a different font name. The file name and the font name are different. Double click the file and see what the name is displayed on top and then look for that in word.

Oh, just incase.. Courier is the name of the font and regular is the weight. So it would show up as "Courier" in word and not "Courier regular"

Another thing.. Courier and Courier new are some of the default windows fonts, why would you need to install it?

Oh wait!

Courier Regular is a system font. It doesn't get used in word anymore. Courier new is the high res version of courier. You should be using that instead.

"Courier New" is true type, and appears in the Word font list.

"Courier" seems to have been replaced by "Courier regular", but that doesn't appear in the Word font list even though it appears in the Windows font list. Neither is true type.

"Courier" that I tried to install (installed) is a XP font.

I can't use "Courier new", it's too light. I want "Courier" because it's a screen font and the document will therefore be printed using the printers version of the font, and HP printers have the option of "Dark" or "Normal" Courier. As an aside, the old Epson version of Courier was much easier on the eyes than either the MS or HP version, but that printer is now dead dead.

AFAIK Courier new is equivalent to courier when it comes to printers. When you print it you should not be able to tell the difference between courier new regular and courier regular.

The original courier is just there for legacy programs that cannot read ttf.

Never the less, the original bit-mapped version of courier is not compatible with word.

You can get the adobe version of courier, but they are postscript fonts, I'm not sure your printer would work with them either, nor do I think they are free.

Edit: you would have to buy Adobe font folio to get Courier from there. $3000 :sick:
 
How old is the printer? All modern printers can read and interpret ttf fonts..

Damn. I was hoping the the old courier was compatible with word.

I guess I'm using open office after all. :sick:

Brand new. It handles ttf fonts just fine, but the font is wrong. I want the darker version (the HP "dark" printer font) not the lighter MS ttf version. Word is version 2010 - I think 2003 still supported the old fonts. Maybe I'll go back to that.

It's a legacy issue, sort of. I need to make a template for a document that is still (25 years later) being prepared in MultiMate. Open office was working fine till I got to page three, which needed boxes around some of the text. Then chaos ensued due to some bug changing the line spacing every time I added a border! I thought I'd use Word, but this font issue seems to have no work-around. Maybe I just need to find a parallel port printer and keep MultiMate running. :cry:

Edit: do you know of any way to make courier new heavier (both normal and bold)? I like courier new - the rounded serif line ends and the length of the serif lines and the thick underline, etc. - I just dot like how light it is.

Edit edit: I know about "Courier dark" (ttf) by HP. It's got it's own set of problems - can't tell bold from normal until it's zoomed more than 100%, etc.
