I have recently upgraded my ADSL line to 4mbit. I will be upgrading my MWEB subscription up to 4mbit tomorrow (have to wait until the new month otherwise they charge half a month subscription for April).

I'd like to find out how people test their lines so that when it's all up and working I can see if its doing what its supposed to do.

They come up with info like....

Upstream 512000
Downstream 3648000
SNR Margin(Upstream) 14 dB
SNR Margin(Downstream) 6.0 dB
Line Attenuation(Upstream) 30.0 dB
Line Attenuation(Downstream) 57.0 dB
CRC Errors(Upstream) 36039
CRC Errors(Downstream) 0
Latency(Upstream) Fast
Latency(Downstream) Fast

How do you do the test that gives you that info?

You get that info from your router. You can do it through your browser, typical address is something like 192.168.1.1, but this depends what router you have, check your manual. When you've connected to your router you'll see a page of options, it's usually under "statistics", once again depending what router you have.

cool, thanks Valis.

I can see the stuff now...but have no idea if it is good or not.

noise margin downstream: 16.5 db
output power upstream: 2.5 dbm
attenuation downstream: 25.5 db

noise margin upstream: 12.0 db
output power downstream: 7.5 dbm
attenuation upstream: 15.0 db

Anyone able to comment on if I'm in good shape or not? Or maybe direct me to a website that explains all this stuff?
