Hi - I read in one of the blogs that you can install yourself and save the R400. Bit peeved cause I know have installed both my dad's and my own and the modems were up and running before they even came. A mate is ordering a new line but we cant see where that option is on the web site - its well hidden it seems. Thanx Tim

You install it yourself.

Well the funny thing I never realised is that I actually did install it myself, if you guys are referring to the router and adding the filter to the telephone jack? But I still paid R480 (two years ago). What exactly qualifies as self install?

above link said:
Self Install Option will be the option for customers requiring ADSL access and being confident enough to complete the installation of the modem without a Telkom technician's assistance. The advantages include a cheaper and quicker installation (no waiting for a Telkom technician to confirm an appointment). Free access to the Telkom helpdesk, and a Telkom technician call out in the event of inability to complete the ADSL Installation (at a call out fee), will remain an alternative option for ADSL customers.
AFAIK it's only been around for a year or so.

yup BUT pls note that it is not available in every single area.

I ordered an installation, then setup my router and 2 days before the technician was supposed to come to my house, I was surfing online already. I then called the control centre, cancelled the call-out for the technician and requested that my order be changed to a self-install, to avoid paying the R404 installation fee.

I also just (2min back) ordered my adsl. And I spoke to one sista said you HAVE to pay the installation fee. Then I phoned again after someone told me it's bs. And they said they'll make a note to not send a technition. And it'll take about 2 weeks to activate. I can call the Progress Centre (0800 456 786) to find out if it's ready.

Now my question. Is there anything I need to know about the installation. Any pointers? Any Step-by-Step guides? Do you get the filter (mentioned above) with the router? How much are they?

Thanx in adv

Nothing major.... plug your router in...see if it syncs and install filters on your voice lines.

My GF did the self-install, a technician didnt come anywhere near her flat and all I did was plug in the modem and voila! no going to the adslverify site or anything.
