My tenant, who comes from the DRC and has been waiting years for a PR certificate, asked me to install Telkom ADSL in his flat. This was done in September 2018. The Telkom tech delivered the router and I set it up

In July this year, the router stopped working and Telkom told him to take it to a Telkom shop for exchange. They refused, citing the lack of proof of delivery. 10213 told me the Telkom shop could easily verify the date of delivery, as everything is on line. Back to the shop, it is not their job the manager said. 10213 said, go back to the shop and have the manager phone us. Back to the shop for the 3rd time. Manager talks to 10213, they have a big row on the phone and he still says its not their job, please leave as you are wasting our time.

He left

10213 promised to send me proof of delivery (4 times). It never arrived

So I phone 10213 and ask if I can order fibre, since the building has been provisioned for fibre

All good, VUMATEL come on 7th August and fit fibre. Line is operational and router will follow in a week. Received a confirmation email from VX Fibre and also Vumatel

Since 14th August, have called Telkom over 30 times. Also sent email to [email protected]. No response

The excuses heard are:
  • It takes 2 to 5 working days to send the router
  • The router was given to the courier this morning (this on 26th August)
  • We cannot locate your order
  • We have not had confirmation from Vumatel
  • We need an Object Number
  • Your account is in arrear so the order was cancelled (untrue, it is paid on invoice date by debit order)
  • We need a cash receipt, please send it (Telkom accounts undertook to send an up to date statement to the correct section)
  • We (The Telkom shop) do not deal with installations
  • There is no fibre at your address
  • We are busy, the back office will call you back (heard this one over 10 times)
  • Your ID number does not reflect on our system, so there is nothing we can do
  • We will escalate your request
  • Our office is about to close, please call on Monday (this at 14h30 on Friday)

Has anyone reading this had Telkom fibre?

Friend in Newlands had Telkom fibre from June 2018 to May 2019. Then it just stopped. Some infrastructure problems. They made him buy an LTE router for R1800 which delivers 1/4 the speed but warned him that the 24 month fibre contract would be enforced, with or without service

The last straw was an email from Vumatel enclosing an invoice for R1750,00 for the provision of fibre, as Telkom told them that I had cancelled the order. Have been unable to reach anyone at Vumatel and filled in the email form on their website without any response

Right so you had endless issues with Telkom adsl and then checked Vumatel coverage and from the 100's of ISP's you could have chosen you chose Telkom on Vumatel.... o_O

The main reason is that there is a 24 month Telkom ADSL contract. This is enforced whether or not there is service, which there has not been since July. Been reported to Telkom and have ref number, but am still charged R805 a month for ADSL

I offered to buy a new router for the tenant, but he wants fibre since the ADSL was so erratic (over 20 breakdowns in one year, some lasting 6 weeks)

A new Telkom fibre contract will replace the ADSL

Will the new Telkom contract tie you in for a further 24 months?

Yes unfortunately. The tenant’s employer agreed to pay for his DSL and now the fibre provided he used Telkom.

I would have preferred him to use my ISP but the financial consideration prevailed. I’m absolutely flummoxed by the strange behavior of Telkom. I had absolutely no idea that they would be so bad. No-one appears to be the slightest bit interested in providing any type of service. It must be a terrible place to work.

Still no fibre

Telkom's latest excuse is that the account is in arrear. Emailed the last statement to them 3 times, they never receive it ([email protected]). One lady said I cannot send attachments, so I embedded it in the document

Telkom said the courier "lost it"
The Courier said they never received it

What a truly pathetic bunch. They called me this morning, asking how I liked the fibre. The gent got a mouthful from me, both barrels at once
