How do you plan your leave

Ever since I've started working I've been taking my leave over the December period, but I'm getting tired of the rush over that period, shopping, etc. As it turns out I'm usually more tired when I get back to work in January

So I've been thinking about taking leave over the quieter periods.

How do you guys do it?

No children, so we take leave outside of school holidays. december is too hot, too expensive, too busy to go anywhere. My favourite months are October and February.

Due to my position I can only take leave after I have submitted and authorised salaries and before month end. Generally just enough time to take 2 weeks.

We are also in retail so I never take leave in December, personally I do not care for Christmas so I usually take my leave in September or October.

We got offspring, but being in retail, we work (if you can call it that ) over the December period and then take a 10 day holiday at the beginning of the year. The weather still fine, and most people are bankrupt, less folk in the shops and others heading home for the hols....

Tends to be around Feb - April. Out of season when there's no snot-nosed kids running around

Before the Children, I took leave in February, still great weather for going to the beach, just much quieter.

Now, last 10 years, I take first two weeks of January, from the 2nd up to a few days after the school opened. This way I find the caravan parks empty (funny how everyone leaves the 1st or 2nd January, it's like a rush), beaches quieter, etc. And I can take my kids to school the first day, though the older one is not keen on that.

Normally take leave during the off-season. Peak periods are pricey and busy.

Also, most of the public holidays fall around the peak periods (Christmas and Easter) so it lessens the need to take leave then.

Usually I plan whenever Head Office (actual HO, not Morty's definition) forces me to take some. But usually I'm content taking it during winter.

That's what I do... or try to, rather.
But it's difficult getting leave since what my job entails never really gets quiet, and I'm the resident specialist in my department, so it can't really get moved over to someone else to do.

Easy, I am not allowed to take over Dec. I am not allowed to take the first two weeks of any month.

Whenever I need a day or two, I submit the leave and take it...

I try and avoid leave over Christmas, its never a holiday with all that rushing around etc etc...

I like taking a few days leave over Christmas, to do a bit of rushing around and partying . But I do take most of my leave in the autumn months and like you said a day here and there - mostly to extend a long weekend.

I'm with the other people December is crazy just look at all the road deaths at that time of year.
That and I dont like standing at the border for 2 days just to get over.

As others here have recommended feb is the best time of the year....nice weather,no crowds and excellent rates on everything.

My only obstacle are the kids. Creches and schools are closed over that period, and you can't exactly leave them with other people

Best option for now would be to take a few days in December and the remainder in June. Our previous year's leave cycle ends in June and the use it or lose it policy applies
