So I got delivery of my D-Link DSL-2500U ADSL Modem + Router yesterday.
It came with all the cables (RJ-11, and RJ-45) and all.

So I plugged everything in and ran the set up disk and I get this error "Call to GetAdaptersInfo failed" and EAccessViolation.
I tried the second option http://192.168.1.1 (even tried the ports: 80, 88, 8080)

So I searched on the web (I had to go to an internet cafe last night) and tried the suggestions that I got:
  • Reset router by pressing the reset button for 10 to 30 seconds - Check
  • Switch the router off and all that - Check
  • Delete cookies and history - Check
  • Make sure that the DHCP Client is started (through Control Panel -> Administrative Tools -> Services - Check
I am using Win XP SP2 and my pc is about 5 years old.
Not sure if it is my on-board NIC but the light is green when I put the cable in. I think a friend of mine once set up a LAN few years ago.

When I do an ipconfig command, nothing happens.

If you're running ipconfig and the results are coming back as null it means that your PC isn't making a proper connection to the router.
There are a few things you can try:

  • Change the ethernet cable that runs from the router to PC
  • Make sure you're plugged into the correct ethernet port
  • Replace your network card
  • Test the router on a different machine to make sure it's not faulty

I've also come across some D-Link routers with IP's of 192.168.0.1 as default.
Good luck :)

There are a few things you can try:

  • Change the ethernet cable that runs from the router to PC - I tried 2 cables
  • Make sure you're plugged into the correct ethernet port - Check
  • Replace your network card - Eish. I was hopping not to do that
  • Test the router on a different machine to make sure it's not faulty. I'll try it on another pc, if I can find it

BTW, my ISP is WebAfrica. just got activated a few days ago.

Is your IP Static or are you using DHCP?
It must be set to use DHCP so the router can assign an IP address on the same subnet so you can connect to 192.168.x.x
What ever address you get as a default gateway should be the address of the router
Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection:

Connection-specific DNS Suffix . : ######.co.za
IP Address. . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.199.247
Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.252.0
Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.198.220 <---- My Routers/Gateway IP

If your not getting an address try typing ipconfig /release then ipconfig /renew see what happens.

Good Luck!

Lose the setup disc. The error you're getting is from the software on it, not the router/your PC. You don't need it anyway.

Log-in to the router (WA provides password on the paper that came along with it). There are really a few things you need to get right:
VPI 8 (One of these is already at right value, don't recall which).
VCI 35 (One of these is already at right value, don't recall which).
Username
Password
Connection mode. On the DLink this is called PoE or something like that. Something with E or Ethernet in it.

Also see if you can ping the router IP and double-check that you've got the POTS right on all the phones in the house. (Do this before the above)

Awesome, great to have you on board :D
Keep me updated on the progress. I'll see if Angelo can jump in here and maybe give some more advise.

Hey guys

@Heita_Hola - what you're experiencing could be due to a host of potential problems related to both software or hardware.

A few very valid points were made by both Ry4n and HX which could resolve this problem.
To touch on a point HX made, I think he was referring to the connection type which need to be set to PPPoE.
You may also check in your device manager if the NIC is enabled.

If any of the above mentioned steps do not resolve the problem please keep me posted.
Alternatively drop me a PM and I'll get a senior consultant to contact you to try and assist you with the setup. :D

I sent the support team a mail and they said they'll contact me. I told them to call me at 18H00.

No problem at all.

Enjoy the weekend and please drop me a PM to let me know if you managed to get connected. :D

So I managed to get connected to the internet. Seeing that I will be doing some very personal stuff on my pc (internet banking and all), what security features/software do I need?

Obviously I can't be too secure, but I need that little bit of a fuzzy feeling that I'm secure.

You definitely need an antivirus (e.g. Avast Free or MSE).

Optionals:
Windows (xp & better) has a built in firewall, but I usually disable it and install Comodo Firewall instead.
SpyBot S&D has an immunization that blocks a lot of bad sites.

For internet banking if want to be really really secure then you'd need a linux liveCD. That boots you into an environment which is guaranteed to be clean from spyware etc & you can use the built-in browser without actually installing linux.

Thanks Havoc. I'll try the Linux LiveCD one. I had an outdated Avast, just need to upgrade it.

IMO, you only need the Windows firewall if you're dialing PPPoE connections directly from your PC, but you don't need it if you're dialing the connections from your router.

I would also recommend either Avast / Avira / Microsoft Security Essentials - all of which are free, but Avast & Avira aren't free for business use.
Spybot Search and Destroy is awesome for its Immunization stuff as well as scans every now and then for spyware.
I'm also very fond of Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware software to clean infected PC's.

Running Linux from a LiveCD simply for Internet Banking is a bit too extreme for me.
If you have a newish PC, then you could just install Linux in a VM and simply use that for Internet Banking, because booting from the LiveCD could take like 5 minutes where as starting Ubuntu from a VM takes like 30 seconds.

Yeah it is quite a hassle. Still deciding whether its too extreme though. Got a call from someone today, AVG is throwing phishing warnings on the banking link he's got bookmarked. So either false alarm or something modified the bookmark.:erm:

Thats no good. Keylogger installed on host OS will still catch your details.

Get rid of AVG, it is seriously no good. Rather use Avira/Avast/Microsoft Security Essentials.

hmm, I never thought about that.
That is why Absa's website has a keypad that you can type in the digits using your mouse.

The best protection is still to avoid dodgy websites / illegal software / warez, and NOT to follow links given in E-mails that point to a banking website.
I've recently learnt that one of our SA banks spend a couple of million Rands per month on people who were scammed! It's really shocking that people are so stupid to click on links that says www.absa.co.za, but in reality it redirects them to a fake site. IMO, the banks would really save a lot more money by simply educating their clients and letting them sign a contract before they are allowed to make use of Internet banking, than they currently have to refund people that were scammed by phising sites.

Its not me. A family friend. And he is emotionally attached to AVG, so no use.

Dunno hey. I reckon it will make a lot of ppl (incl me) paranoid if there is no safety net. Its like the card skimming business...one just can't realistically cover all angles.

You're right about the education angle though. Instead of spending millions on this rapport software they should really try a 10 easy steps to safe banking flyer.

hmm, I never thought about that.

Hey...keypad...thats actually pretty solid. VM + OS onscreen keyboard will fly for all banks. That way the keystrokes stay inside the VM. Plus I can use XP & don't need to freak out ppl w/ linux. So gonna recommend this to a bunch of ppl.

OMG....dsl 2500un. I bricked mine the first day. Never again, cheap design and poorly written firmware.
1. Set static up address in the same IP range as router.

2. Ping to confirm, and access via http://

Ai NoLogic001. You've probably just flashed it with a wrong build, because there are 3 different hardware builds for most of the D-Link routers/modems.
The DSL-2500U is one of the best ADSL modems that I've seen and I absolutely love it.

One thing that I have to agree with you on is that D-Link would allow you to flash it with incorrect firmware!

Yeah, that is exactly that. I flashed the wong firmware. The website was confusing and I figured that even if it is the wrong firmware the router would warn me, like most do.

It didn't, the recovery methods also didn't work. Phoned d-link and they said there is nothing they can do. I have to replace it.
