How do you stop solid hotplates from rusting, I recall seeing some commercial product available to stop it, I haven't seen it anywhere recently though and are there any DIY concoctions you can use?

Got a Ceramic induction Hob. No rusting........

A few drops of clean cooking oil. Wipe with a paper towel. Done once you have cleaned the plate and it is cool.

And it must be clean or you will cause smoke the next time you heat the plate up.

You don't.

Your best bet is to keep them dry and replace them every couple of years if it bothers you

Even clean oil will smoke once it hits smoke point

There is a product for maintaining hot plates I just can't remember what it's called.

How do the old grannies with 30yr old stoves and still with spotless original hot plates with no rust get it right?

The thing about the rust that gets to me is it gets almost welded onto the bottom of my rather expensive pots and I'd prefer if that didn't happen.

I have the exact same issue. One of my plates is rusting. Oil it fairly regularly, but once rust starts, there's no stopping it.

What oil do you use?

Probably mineral oil aka Paraffin BP would be a good option in terms of smoke and smell.

I tried oiling them with olive oil but it does make a bit of a smell the next time you use the plates.

You need to clean it while it is hot. Then it won't rust. So make sure it is not wet when done cooling or put wet stuff on it. Don't put a lid from a hot pot on one of the cold plates. Clean it while lukewarm. There is a product you can use to clean it when there is already rust, can't remember what is called. Should spot it in the cleaning section. And no, don't put oil on it. Just keep it dry.

It occurred to me Spray n Cook may work well and I gave it a try - virtually no smoke or smell even when the plate is at max temp.

Read up on seasoning your cast iron pan. flaxseed oil...clean ,coat, heat x 3 times may do it....this may work.
