Yes stopping suddenly at a mini circle because you legalistically call it a 4-way stop where all around you most people are not doing that will likely get you rear ended. You were technically correct. The law will cover you. He'll get a ticket and his insurance will pay your insurance. BUT you will have the hassle and trouble of dealing with an accident. Yes you were right, but it ended in a crash. Yes you'll win in a court but you'd have wasted time and money and put people at increased risk here.
Obviously if you see someone approach from the right you stop, the way one would on a big circle, but that's not the point. One should always adapt one's style to not stand out. Often we are in situations where performing the legal maneuver may cause an accident as the other drivers behave a little differently.
This goes in all interactions. If you're with someone from a different culture where eye contact is threatening, while maybe it's friendly in yours, as a sane person you adapt and not fix your gaze on his, unless you want trouble. Most people don't care to be proven right. Most fights are not worth fighting. And most situations should be de-escalated or not be escalated in the first place.
Of course we must agree to disagree. I'm not here to convince anyone, just stating an alternative, more realistic and safer way of doing things.
