How does one use Gamemax?

Roosta what server you playing on? I tried Gamemax last night and all I got was a constant 333-338ms over a 2 hour period where if I left it off my connection would jump 250-400ms during the course of a 2 hour period so I dont know have found after the last maintenance latency has increased dont know if anyone else found that on the EU server?

I'm on Tarren Mill (EU).

Try this test to see if you are using gamemax:

Load putty & connect.
Load your proxy app (I use SocksCap32)
Load WoW through your proxy app.

Go out of the city where there is less traffic. If your ping does not drop to ~250ms, try closing down putty and see if it disconnects you from wow. If it doesn't, there might be something wrong in your settings.

Edit: Also there has been quite a few lag spikes happening after the patch, so its possible that this could be affecting you aswell.

Also make sure you have the reg hax disabled.

As far as I know it should only dc if you close Putty, not sockscap.

btw. I've stopped using gamemax now. It did lower my ping but every now and again I'd get these big lag spikes, one of which cost me 500g :(, and often DC on some bosses (esp. 4 horseman and Grobbulus). So even though my ping is higher now I'm not getting the spikes I was before. I'll have to wait for my next raid to see if I still DC on those boss fights though.

If I understand it correctly there is a lot of overhead on normal internet communication to make sure that packets are sent and received correctly.

One of the things Gamemax does is drop some of the overhead.

Now if you were to do that on your machine then all your downloads/streaming etc. would become unreliable (parts of your download never reaches you but your machine does not care).

It improves your latency because every command you give is not sent & confirmed, it is only sent, but it makes your internet unreliable.

With something like a MMORPG it is not the end of the world if a packet is missed here or there.

I saw a while back there is a WoW latency hack that you can do to your PC to achieve the same result (if you already use an unshaped account) but like I said, it corrupts your downloads.

Using a 3rd party that only drops the overhead on WoW traffic makes a lot of sense.

P.S. I use Gamemax on Vodacom 3G and when the 3G connection is not sh|t (as it usually is) i get 300 - 450ms pings. Without it I get 400-600ms.
The xp hack is bull**** it lowered my ping on 3g with 150 but i had more lag spikes then ever.

Your experience are different to mine... It lowered my ping significantly and I still don't have spikes...

hehe, luckily I've stopped using them ;)

About to do the same.

1. I have also noted Lag spikes but only read now that it could be gamemax. I blamed my Wireless connection.
2. R 69 a month is not something I'll pay for a little added benefit. I've been playing without it for 2 years, I might as well just keep playing without it.
3. I just stumbled onto some free SOCKS proxies and will try them on a trial account and see what happens.

Ditto to that. I have tested it on both my pc's. One with the 'hack' and one without. There was a difference of around 100 - 150ms (250 - 400ms vs 400 - 550ms).

I setup my own vpn server overseas quickly. Can anyone tell me which ports udp and tcp are not shaped by Telkom?

Everything is working, just want to use the correct port to avoid the shaping from hell

Edit: Latency is about 346ms, and I doubt I would get any better, except if I move my server from US->UK

Not shaped?
Hu?
I don't think you understand shaping.
In order for shaping to work, EVERYTHING must be analysed and shaped.
EVERYTHING.

And, you cannot just use port 80, cos that is run through a transparent proxy, so it behaves like a badly shaped port if you try it directly.

Try port 25 (SMTP) and (110) POP3.

I understand shaping quite well actually :)

I used port 21 and I am getting the 346ms with that.

My server is located in US, so my packets go:
ZA -> US -> UK (Or wherever the WoW servers are located).

I'll move my vps to Europe and see if I get a better result.

I think I'll save another 70ms if I move it
