How does the adsl exchange and internet accounts work? with regards to d/l and u/l and latency.

I have had issues with my latency from day 1 wich is double of what it should be, so far what telkom has said to have done is this--

1-Changed my line that runs to the exchange or the box on my street(something in there) i think.
2-Changed my ports at the exchange +/- 2 or 3 times.
3-Replaced the little box i plug my adsl and phone line into.
4-Checked my line from my house to the exchange resulting in no fault also +/- 2 or 3 times.
5-They said a specialist had looked into my problem,(i dont think they really have these kind of okes TBH) still had a technician doing the same thing as last time.

I am on a 384kb line and my downloading comes through at normal of like 39.6K.
So why is my latency so high if my downloading is maximum speed?
, last year i connected to the same exchange from the same building with the same line speed and had no problems what so ever.
If anyone knows what i can do to find the problem and to fix this it would be awsome thanks.

Would help if you told us your latency to local & international sites. Also whether you are on a shaped or unshaped account.

well,,i get around 60-75 ms on the normal telkoma 1 gig account,,,,but it should be around 40 ms. i can use the same account at another location and it runs fine... its mine that is high at my place

384 and 512 connections are pooled onto a tiny piece of the available fibre.

If you are on a DSLAM that is being accessed by a lot of 384 / 512 users who are downloading all the time (and these new uncapped products cause this to happen a lot), then your only option is to switch to a 4MB line to improve your latency, or get plugged into a different DSLAM.

Sad, but proven.

384 KiloBITS
39 kiloBYTES

Not bad at all.

See plenty of other threads on this issue...

its not my download speed thats the problem,, its the unusual latency i should'nt be getting, they did say they changed something at the DSLAM, but i cant be sure if they really did, cause i never got any improvment at all.

What kind of equipment do these packets being sent go through in order to tell me the RTT of the packet that has been sent,, there has to be somewhere along the line from my house to the server i connect to that has a problem,
if i know what it goes through, then i can log a fault asking telkom to check that specific equipment, what happens after my information gets sent to my local exchange, maybe its the DSLAM on the other end that is giving a problem where the server connects to.

Do a traceroute on the same account from both locations at more or less the same time. Comparing the two will tell you where the latency gets introduced.

C:\>tracert 196.4.79.20

Tracing route to foxx.saix.net [196.4.79.20]
over a maximum of 30 hops:

1 24 ms 25 ms 26 ms dsl-146-168-01.telkomadsl.co.za [165.146.168.1]

2 64 ms 62 ms 62 ms tpr-ip-esr-1-ge-6-0-0.telkom-ipnet.co.za [196.43
.10.86]
3 tpr-ip-esr-1-ge-6-0-0.telkom-ipnet.co.za [196.43.10.86] reports: Destinati
on net unreachable.

Trace complete.

This is what i get when i do a traceroute to the serverfrom the connection that has the problem, you see how it jumps to tripple the amount on the next route, this is pretty much what i am getting on average when connected, it will sometimes go abit higher due to some packets being being lost.

any ideas?

Ok so i have been pinging other local website,, and i found that if i ping telkom.co.za i get an average of 39 ms, so my connection can get that if it wanted to.

What i have also seen is that a few times at exactly 00:05am in the night i would lose connection for about 5 seconds, and then all of a sudden my latency would drop to 37-45ms. it has also happend at different times. this lasts for an hour or so, and when i reconnect the next day its back to a high latency of 75ms.

So what part of the connection is causing this where along the line is it, i need to pin point on whats happening here. still any ideas?

Are you sure it's not on the server side where the problem is? maybe during the day when there are a lot of users connected.

Telkom might do a disconnect on your line at 00:05am which they're not allowed to but Icasa won't be able to prove this. If Telkom do still do disconnects maybe it's disconnecting a lot of users hence the jump in latency until all the users are connected again.
