Hi friends

This discussion started in another thread, but to keep it on topic I made this one instead.

So I have a lvl48 combat rogue... I quest with a mage and use my stunlocks to sort out mobs 6-love.

For NPC's, I normally open like this:

Distract, cheapshot, CS/SSx2 (I forget which one its called), Kidney shot, CS/SSx1, gouge ... and by that time my mage has killed the mobster - if not, I finish it off with backstabs if the mage pulled enough aggro. So PvE isn't a huge problem...However (comma) I struggle immensely during PvP to kill anyone (aside from hunters when I blind their pets) ... unless I catch them by surprise, I normally lose.

Right now I have the dreadblade dagger of the tiger as my mainhand dagger (for backstab) and the phantom blade as my offhand sword. This is probably terrible, but I need to sort out my fighting skill. I'm hoping to get the thrash blade in the next few evenings though, after doing mauradon.

I'm trying to get my dual-wield sword fighting up, but don't have 2 worth while swords yet... besides, how do you compensate for backstab?

Any ideas on how you fight? I'm also curious about who still uses combat spec rogues after getting to lvl70. I'm wondering if subby isnt a good idea ... how does it compare to combat/assassination?

A PvE spec for a 70 Rogue is Assassination/Combat, typically 19/42/0 or 20/41/0 depending on personal preference.
The problem with Combat Daggers is positioning and Energy.
Even with Combat Potency and Relentless Strikes you will struggle with energy constantly as BS is very expensive.
With our latency positioning is a nightmare as your damage is immediately gimped if you're not behind your target (which isn't always as easy as it sounds)

If I were you I would level as Combat Swords. I leveled my first Rogue with Daggers and afterwards realised what a fool I'd been so I leveled my 2nd on as Swords.

When leveling I typically would open with a CS, immediately Slice and Dice and then SS until the mob is almost dead before Evicerating.

In order to make you SS as effective as possible you need to always have the slowest weapon possible in your mainhand (typically 2.60 or slower)

Once you have Combat Potency you need to have the fastest possible offhand (typically 1.50 or faster)

An example 19/42/0 spec: http://www.wowhead.com/?talent=f0eboeZGcV0bVzxMGRt

You could choose to go Mace or Fist with the same build depending on what weapons you get but until you're 70 there aren't a lot of Maces around for Rogues and both weapons do slightly less damage then Swords Spec because of the extra Attack Proc.

I was Sub spec till lvl 60 so I doubt my imput will help much for your lvl, but here it goes.

Lose the Dagger ;)

Get a very slow Main hand the slower the better, slower weapons hit harder.
Try and get your Attack Power as high as possible.

Now My fight would be like this. Remember you are a rogue, you don't get attacked, you attack. Also select your fights. Don't go and try and kill a protection/Fury warrior. Go for the clothies.

If I'm attacked first, I use vanish. Remember you need to start the fight to win. Also make sure you have cripling poison on your main hand. Once you are in range.

Cheap shot, SS, SS, SS, Kidneyshot, SS,SS, evasion, Now by this time they will be fighting back. Get the combo points up and stay close to them. If you need to bandage use blind, then bandage. It's helpfull to have a DOT poison on the off hand, this will interrupt them from doing a bandage. Now if you have enough AP you will not even see him out of stunlock. If they do get out of stunlock.... get more AP !

That is just my 2c and how I keep fights going in PvP. When I was your lvl, I would just sap, Ambush,Backstab, Kidneyshot and then backstab till they die :D

But I was sub spec ;)

I use cs, ss, snd, ss x 5, rip or evis.

or

cs, ss, snd, shiv x 5, envemon

Guys he's lvl 48 ^^

SnD is no use as they are dead even before your Energy is finished :D
I Use SnD now yea, at lvl 48 it's just a waist of Combo poionts ;)

Pitbull, that makes sense ... since I get rogues 1-2lvls above me who kill me without me ever getting out of stunlock - and they score a K/O on me :(

you obviously use daggers as a sub to do the backstabs. At lower lvls all I did was gouge / backstab / gouge / backstab the whole time.

Now I'm slowly learning new tricks... btw, why evasion ?

SnD is always good. It's 30% more Damage. If you open and then immediately SnD chances are it will last the duration of the fight.

Also, Voicy as Sub you'll be hitting with Ghostly Strike or Hemo. Never BS.

That prevents the other person from scoring a hit on you. That is only if you see he is going to get out of Stunlock.

edit: I loved daggers, if you want to play daggers do so. But respec to Sub. And remember once you hit outland, from lvl 58 - about 65 there is no daggers anywhere

That is why I respec'd to Swords 20/41

Cool! thanks guys - I'll try have a look at my fighting style a bit more (damn Warsung Gulch is becoming a ball ache)

I'm on 0/35/0 atm - and 1 instance away from dual swords... the thrash blade looks good, but it would look VERY sweet having 2x phantom blades sheathed across my back. If it werent for mining i'd NEVER be able to afford the matts to have one made for me!

Combat Swords ftw,

I gonna write a letter to Blizz, why the fu*ck can you buy every other weapon except swords with badges.

Can get some nice fist weapons with badges but i like my swords, got the glad set. Was going to get merciless, but am waiting for S4 to come out. Brutal one handed swords are basically the best in the game, just getting the personal rating requirement will be a bitch

Speaking of badges, I'm sitting on about 30 WSG and 20 Arathi Basin badges ... Obviously you need other badges to buy epics, but how many badges of each would you recommend I work for? (obviously more = better, but I don't want to be wasting BG time on 1 field when I could be getting other badges too or spend my time questing to 70)

How do the badges work anyway? i.e. Is it random requirements like 400HP+35WSG = this kief dagger - or is it more balanced ? i.e. 400hp+20AB+20WSG badges

I'm going to try get my WSG stash up to about 60-80 before moving on... (with a stroke of luck I managed to claim 9 last night alone so I may just push for 100 - altho then it starts becoming more work than play).

"I gonna write a letter to Blizz, why the fu*ck can you buy every other weapon except swords with badges. "

Because the only 1h weapon that raid bosses drop are swords. I have yet to see a 1h dps mace , and 1h fists and daggers are incredibly rare past Karazahn. At least from what I've seen.

Heh, they're talking about Badges of Justice, which are used to buy level 70 epixx loot and drop from heroics and raid bosses.

Battleground tokens are used in conjunction with honour points to buy PVP loot. You need a lot of each. I'd suggest trying to cap-out both (75 000 honour poinjts, and 100 each of the AB, WSG, AV and EOTS tokens) so that by the time you ding 70 you can buy your complete S1 set (1 item costs in the region of 15 000 honour points for eg).
Farming Battleground gear is all about amassing honour and less about the tokens. You'll probably end up with a surplus of tokens in fact. I use mine to buy cheap pots for eg.

In SSC/TK there isn't much for offhand if you're an Enhance Shammy but there are plenty of MH options.
BT is a different story though with some very nice One-Handed Maces and Axes.

We're pretty limited. For Example, in SSC/TK there is 1 MH Sword for a Rogue. There are no Offhand Swords. The next MH Sword for a Rogue is from Anetheron and the next Offhand sword is on Mother Sharazz.

It's a sad day indeed when an Enhancement Shaman has more weapon options then you.

If it wasn't for PvP, Combat Swords Rogues would be severely shafted.

Warglaives makes up for it.

wtb legendary shammy weapon.

Just to get a few things clear...

How does a mob not die after the chain you described in your original post? Especially with a mage assisting... Anyhow, my advice to you, since you are questing with a mage is not to stealth at all tbh. Just pop from mob to mob like a pinball killing em. I honestly cant see any mob live past 5 seconds with both a rogue and mage wailing on it...

Anyhow, to the pvp side...

Any spec works in BG's. Just pick your target carefully. That is the key to success. Most rogues have problems with frost mages and paladins. Accept it ;)

Because I'm an idiot and only recently discovered I have 0/5 dagger specialization points.

Nah fighting with the mage is no problem at all. We take out the same level mob as us without the HP bar even moving. Its when I'm by myself and facing more than 2 that I suffer - until I recently discovered the joys of "blind" as well as "evade".

I'm getting much more comfortable with my rogue now.

its easy, sap one, blind the other bliksem the 3rd if you get into kuk vanish.

my latest problem is that I cannot run with ungeared/noob groups cause 1 hit and i pull all the aggro.
