If they gave him two options, it implies that they had to have backed it up with a serious threat (like recalling his arse), otherwise he would just have ignored his minions.

He and all of his concubines still get a salary for life, I don't see what he has to gain by continuing to occupy the office (other than an annual 5%+ increase in the money he steals in exchange for being the most corrupt person in government).

Stays out of jail. Once his time is up, he will surely be brought to justice for the rape claims, corruption charges etc.

From one analyst, the options were backed up by the unveiled threat of the ANC losing a significant chunk of its funding next year.
