So around 14 months back I come home and there are Telkom guys walking around the my complex in Northriding, persuading us to sign up for 20mbps ADSL2+ - which I decided to try.

First night Speedtest / SAIX test shows a real world speed of 17mbps and I get 2MB/sec when downloading - very happy. 3 months later this is 16mbps .... then 15mbps ... then 13mpbs .... and this morning 12.3mbps (lowest I've ever seen). While I'm still happy, I've lost 5mbps in just over a year.

Could this be congestion?
Does this just go indefinitely?

In the time my sync speed has dropped and my max speed has increased, where most other are reporting speed increases.

Downsteam
Current Rate(Kbps) 18431
Max Rate(Kbps) 24848
Noise Margin(dB) 7.8
Attenuation(dB) 23.5
Output Power(dBm) 18

Upstream
Current Rate(Kbps) 947
Max Rate(Kbps) 947
Noise Margin(dB) 15.9
Attenuation(dB) 12
Output Power(dBm) 11.5

Fekkit

At best I a have a 4meg - real world speed 3,7

I complained abot something insignificant ..... 2,6megs

I complained about this .... 1.3megs

Dial up this morning .................. :(

Who is your ISP?

I just did another test and I'm back to 15mbps+ - so dropped 2mbps which isn't too bad I guess.

Speedtest is local right, is there a site to test international?

Looks just like my issue i had. I really could not let it go so i just sent a PM to TelkomZA on this forum asking for a port reset at 20480kbps. Also ask for VDSL modulation and buy a VDSL modem, It is much faster at around 19mbps actual.

This is just a profile issue, I see your line is fine for 24mbps so just a small issue that will be fixed in 5 minutes.

But you had VDSL then?
Won't work with ADSL2+?

had a reasonably stable 20mb adsl2 connection with these stats - However would never really get the 20mb and had to phone in every Monday morning to get it swapped back to 20mb after ASSIA decided it was best for my line to be on 16mb

Having swapped over to a VDSL modem and had my profile changed i get a rock solid 20mb now - Hasnt been stepped down once yet and no drops in sync

Code:
Actual rate (up)	1916 kbps
Actual rate (down)	20480 kbps
Data transfered (sent)	0 kB
Data transfered (received)	0 kB
Output power (up)	12.4 dBm
Output power (downstream)	6 dBm
Line attenuation (up)	0 dBm
Line attenuation (downstream)	33.9 dB
Noise margin (up)	5 dB
Noise margin (downstream)	6.3 dB

SnR of 7.8 DB... Does VDSL run on much lower noise rations? With 7.8db I dont know how you even sync..
Used to sync at 6db noise and get higher speeds.

One more thing, with people jumping to fiber (where available) and getting of the exchange, isn't it better for those still on copper?

You forgot about ASSIA?, even though it would reduce congestion, if i'm not mistaken your line stats (ATT, SNR..etc) would still play a big role in what speed you'd get :)
