How far the rand has fallen: from 2000 to 2016

You should rather compare it with another currency. e.g. Euro or Aud $.

Sept 11 2011 was a crazy event that makes the graph look like it goes up and down when it fact it always just went one direction..

Which event happened Sep 11 2011?

I know where he made a mistake, a 1 where a 0 should be

I wasn't trying to be a dick - if he's referring to 9/11 then he's clearly out by a decade, however, something must have happened in 2011 too as it just climbs from there and doesn't look back.

It's been dropping for decades. However there was a long period of reasonably 'stability' in SA, when commodity exports were also picking up. Once people realise they can't speculate on the Rand, it does seem to strengthen and that has a reinforcing effect. There was even talk of trying to weaken it to help our exports. Eventually ZAR did get a bit to strong and the trend reversed, then Zuma's second term did the rest.
