this is one competition that went $16,000,000 wrong.

If you follow the news there had been a landmark case over Jennifer Strange's water death that happened back in early 2007 after the Nintendo Wii was released. 107.9 The End, a Sacramento radio station had a contest "hold your wee for a wii" and whoever could hold their wee the longest would win the wii. Mrs. Strange had prepared for the contest by training to take in as much water as possible and hold it for as long as possible. Later 107.9 held the event and Mrs. Strange participated. Mrs. Strange went home after getting second place and fell asleep and never woke up. Entercom, the parent company of 107.9 The End immediately fired the DJ's upon notification that a participant had died. The Strange family had been asking for over 40 million dollars due to her death. At the time of her death Mrs. Strange was making $50,000 to $60,000 a year. They ended up winning over 16 million dollars, 1.5million for economical, and over 15 million for "love" (sex, companionship, etc).

On January 12, 2007, Jennifer Strange, a 28-year-old woman and a mother of 3, from Rancho Cordova, California, was found dead in her home by her mother, hours after trying to win one of Nintendo's Wii game consoles. KDND 107.9 "The End" radio station's "Hold Your Wee for a Wii" contest, involved drinking large quantities of water without urinating. Because of the name of the contest, some believe that not urinating is related to hyponatremia (a condition related to water intoxication). This is untrue; this type of water intoxication is caused by excessive and rapid consumption of (sodium-free) water. Radio staff were terminated. Civil charges against the radio station were filed by Jennifer's family, [13] and the family was eventually awarded $16.5 million in the ensuing wrongful death lawsuit. [14] The FCC has launched its own investigation to determine if the station violated the terms of its operating license.

If she drank something like energade etc she would have been fine.
 
Don't know if there are any runners on the forum, but Noakes devotes a fair bit of time to hyponatremia in his book: "The Lore of Running."

He regards it as a far greater danger than dehydration, because as the participant experienced, it can lead to sudden and unexpected death.
