As you all know by reading my posts in various threads and on various forums, while from time to time I may get hecticly pissed off at iBurst (99% of the time its a staff problem), I still have great faith and hope in the technology.
Today, I can honestly say that a large portion of that faith paid off.
Yesterday was a horrible day. Our uncapped BDSL went down, and the ISP and telkom were blameing each other. To cut a long story short, the earliest either party would come to the table would be the next day, with no guarantee of a solution.
Anyone who knows anything about IT, and has worked in the professional market, will know that a company can not be without email and internet services for long (s`pecially if its an accouting and audit firm with deadlines).
My boss came to me, livid, with "urgent emails" to "ministers" (my logs say otherwise), that needed to be sent, and that I have to find a solution right then.
A little light came on in my head. Jumping in my car I raced home, and grabbed my iBurst desktop modem out my room. On the way back to the offices, I stopped by a supplier and purchased a Wireless 11g Broadband Router. Got to the offices, went to the server room, disconnected the gateway server, went back to my office, plugged the router into a network point, gave it the same IP as that of the gateway server, and voila! My offices network was connected again.
It was also performing better than dsl, and the whole office was impressed (they now pay for my iburst connection on condition that if the dsl goes down again, I will supply them with a temp connection....this works juuuuuuust fine for me).
So yeah... thanks wbs
the mobility of your product saved the day.
Just one thing that confused me a little.... ok no... a lot. I plugged the modem in to the router, and with the default username and password supplied by thae factory it was able to connect to the iburst network. wtf is up with that? I got the fright of my life when my system all of a sudden started pinging is.co.za, and I had not even entered the web interface of the router!!!
Anyone got any ideas on that?
So while iBurst might still have issues, and wireless is still in its infantcy. I honestly believe that its the future. Today, it made me look good to my employers so for me, its already worth it.
