This current weather is cooking my router and I dont want it to overheat or anything but since im too lazy to wire a small fan to it can I not buy a small USB desk fan and stick it in its own USB port?

Will the voltage be sufficient because its a printing/sharing port.

Will 24/7 of the USB port usage cook the router even more?

Nice, I was thinking of a laptop cooler but was uncertain if some used USB.

I may aswell get one for the router and the PVR decoder, its also cooking.

I just hope my router/PVR will give it constant power and not turn it off after X amount of time.

What makes you think the heat is a problem though?

The only scenario I can think of that might be an issue is if its catching sun or is getting exhaust air from a PC or something. Beyond that...let it cook.

PVR might make sense though....wouldn't be surprised if that thing was designed with inadequate cooling.

Each router is different you know
Never. In my 8 years here at mybb I have never seen such a thing as a router differing from mine. It does not exist.

Look you're welcome to spend R100 + electricity bill for the fan. Hell you can spend 50k on industrial cooling for all I care...all I'm saying is have you thought through the cost/benefit here? I'm aware of exactly one router line affected by heat issues and that one is fixed by mounting it on the (included) vertical bracket.

What is the chance that it's a Netgear, out of experience the routers hang when getting hot!

I have several, and if you stack 3 ontop of each other without cooling, it hangs!

Good thing we have R70k credit from City Power, thermometer is reading 51 C.

Tis a Netgear, I think in the latest FW update they might have increased the clocks a bit.

I've got a credit too...still interested in keeping usage low.

More curious about this thermometer of yours. I know the router you're rocking doesn't have a built in thermo (DGN2200 - its the vertical stand one I mentioned before) so not sure which temp you're using here?

Standard mercury thermometer, I know its not very accurate but its sure as hell better than thumbsucking.

Going to get me an IR Thermometer, at R406 its a steal.

ah...uhm...I'm afraid to ask...but you measured the temp of your router with a mercury thermo? HOW? And you got to 51C?

Not sure whether to be doubtful or impressed...

You are confusing me...what do you mean how?

How does one take their temperature with a mercury thermometer.

Wow you guys love arguing. It is simple - of your router runs hot, it runs hot. If you want to cool it down do something about it. If you don't, then don't.

Thats what I'm asking you. You said you measured 51C. You said you used a merc thermo. So....

You tell me...seeing how you measured it. See conv below.

Cooling the router make the router more stable and longer life span.

I use 8 piece of lego, some prestik, 12cm dc fan, USB cable from a broken USB mouse and isolation tape.

Running 24/7 with no problems. :D

Whats with the plastic covering the router?

I would love to drill some holes at the bottom of the router but it still has 5 months under warranty.
