How is this for a COOLing idea?

I'm happy to report that if the router I buy needs third-party cooling, that it's a piece of **** and I'd buy a new one.

Why would anyone want their setup to look so untidy and downright ugly?

Cooling the router make the router more stable and longer life span.

I use 8 piece of lego, some prestik, 12cm dc fan, USB cable from a broken USB mouse and isolation tape.

Running 24/7 with no problems. :D

You router will run a lot cooler if the ventilation holes aren't covered by plastic.

Why not just get one of these and plug it into the USB port?

5 months warranty? Then the majority of summer its covered. Test if it really is over heating. If it breaks, it breaks... routers don't need good airflow or 3rd party cooling. And without ventilation holes, a fan will just be cooling the routers plastic cover.

As has been mentioned, the cooler any electronics run the better. In the user manual for the DGN2200 router it states environmental operating temp of max 40 degrees, so if your environment around the router is below that it should be fine. With my graphics card the stated max temp of chip is 105 degrees, but it is recommended to stay about 30 degrees below that, and mine usually runs at about 75 degrees when gaming. So electronics can run at high temp, but it shortens the lifespan. For large industrial motors, I think if you reduce the operating temp by 10 degrees you almost double the life of the motor, so cooling definitely helps.

Whats with the plastic covering the router?
You router will run a lot cooler if the ventilation holes aren't covered by plastic.

Lazy to take the plastic off, with the fan under it, the temperature is few degree difference with or without it (measured with an infrared temperature gun). Since is not burning hot, so I don't worry too much.

I would love to drill some holes at the bottom of the router but it still has 5 months under warranty.

You need to drill the hole on top as heat rises. I have drilled holes on my linksys router for ventilation it works like a charm. :D If my warranty passed on the netgear, I might drill holes also.

Here is my old mod, overheating router given to me for free.
Used 12cm DC fan, Terminal Connector, 4x 5c coin, 4x Lego, some prestik, some zalman heatsink and drill bigger holes. Only replaced because of wireless g only.

I have tried USB fans in the picture and is loud after a period of time. My guess due to dust, cause the bearing out of place. So I use a 12Vdc fan, it does the job and is still quiet even after 4 years.
